My first "favorite song"...

Posted over 4 years ago
My earliest memories of music being in my life seem to be when I was about four years old. My main source of musical intake came from the pop hits of the day I'd hear on the radio or from the bedroom of my older sister. Sadly I remember hearing songs like "You Give Love A Bad Name" by Bon Jovi and "Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister (shudder), but I also recall some 80s popalicious hits like "Invisible Touch" by Genesis, "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel, and "Higher Love" by Steve Winwood, that I still enjoy today. I also had a small music collection of 45s that I would play on a little red travel record player. The collection consisted mainly of pop hits from the early 60s. Certain songs from this group that still remain in my memory seem to consist of fun parts that would attract themselves to a four year old. Songs like "Witch Doctor" by Ross Bagdasarian, which contains a playful "oo ee oo aa aa ding ding walla walla bing bang", or sing-a-longs like "The Battle of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton. But what really got me a that age was a guest spot from my favorite cartoon character...and I'm not just talking any cartoon mouse either...I'm talking the "fastest mouse in all of Mexico". I give you my first "favorite song": Mr. Pat Boone with "Speedy Gonzales"...So tell me Moggers...do you remember your first favorite song? (and while I'm at it I'll mention my second "favorite song": Katrina and the Waves - "Walking on Sunshine" HAH!)

  3. kat3260 says Ahhh my granddaddy used to play this song for me, along with the Chipmunks album. And I have a DISTINCT memory of being buckled in a carseat & singing "Walkin' on Sunshine." I thought for awhile that Katrina & The Waves was my namesake.

  4. RaG3aH0liC says How is the new record player workin out? I don't have distinct memories of this song as a child, but on one of the first major road trips that I remember, we were moving from TN to MD (where/when I met ol' Lyrikhan in '86) and in the car I remember hearing Starship's 'Sara' over and over. Not exactly the same as what you are posting about, but that is definitely an early song I remember. And yea....same as what you were saying with the older sister syndrome.....fuckin Bono.

  18. Rawkkiddoh says Wish I could listen to it, alas I can not. I will say most of my favorite songs from when I was a kid came from k-tel compilations. I always found the funnier the song, the more I liked it. As for the warner brothers cartoons, they were my saturdays growing up

  29. James12 says my first real favorite song's got to be "Yesterday" by the Beatles, ever since I was young, It's stayed that way for a long time, I remember listening to it for the first time, the melodic strumming, and then as I grew up and came to truly understand the lyrics, I came to appreciate the song even more, anyway, great post, see you later...James.
