WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

(82)

I was sad to learn today that Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright has succumbed to cancer at the age of 65. Many fans, like myself, I’m sure will find this as a bit of a shock as his struggle with the disease was short and not publicized.

Wright was a founding member of the London outfit; his organ shaping the sound of the early Floyd. He also contributed songwriting and vocals throughout his tenure with Pink Floyd, including providing lead vocals on "Astronomy Domine" and "Matilda Mother" off of Floyd's debut album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Some of his more notable compositions include "Remember a Day", "See-Saw", "Summer ‘68", and "The Great Gig in the Sky". Wright was also a major force in the creation of such masterpieces as The Dark Side of the Moon and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" off Wish You Were Here. He had a well publicized rift with Roger Waters during the late 70s and eventually split with the band, though he spent some time with Floyd as a session musician during the early 80s for The Wall tours and for the creation of the album A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Wright was officially brought back to the reformed Floyd by David Gilmour after Waters left and began writing again for The Division Bell, and in turn, won a Grammy alongside Gilmour for the instrumental track "Marooned" in 1995. Wright also had two solo albums, Wet Dream, from 1978, and Broken China, from 1996. In recent years Wright toured alongside Gilmour during his On an Island tours.

Sad to hear. And a beautiful piece by which to remember him.

if i recall correctly, he was your first rock interview, was he not Jonh? seemed like an elegant man

agreed David...overshadowed by the more dominant personalities, but the true masterpieces fall short without Wright's contributions

Curiously, three of the four musicians on this track have died within the last two years or so. This was one of only two tracks on "SOS" to feature Syd Barrett on guitar, and drums were played, not by Nick Mason but by Norman "Hurricane" Smith", who died in March 2008

Lyrik - that's right. He was very tolerant, given the amateur facing him.

Always thought of him as the orchestrater. He'll shine on via his musical contributions, just like Syd.

Dear Lyrikhan,

It is good than you published a post for Rick Wright death. He was a great man for me and I became myself mad about keyboards and synthesizers most when I listen his amazing sounds he played on the long titles Echoes in 1969 on VCS3 synthsizers. I did not know he was dead when I composed a long piece as well the same day he saddly passed away. So I tribute that music for him title is "Une autre Terre" (An other Earth in english) that I hope is resting peacefully now far from the pain.

bonjour Patroux

The world has been blessed by not only the music Rick created, but by the inspiration he has given to artists such as yourself. Thank you for sharing your piece.
