SOUNDS OF FUTURE PAST AND PRESENT PERFECT

Lyrical Revolution's Lyrics of the Week 10/5 - Brid Og Ni Mhaille

Posted over 3 years ago
So about a week or two ago, I made a post requesting suggestions for some good traditional and modern Irish music. A few nice people kindly recommended some nifty bands, and while I was browsing iTunes for some of them I came across a song in Irish by The Corrs off their album Home (recommended by Drewfonts). IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG I'VE EVER HEARD! I listened to about 10 seconds of it and immediately bought it. Before I even knew what the lyrics meant I felt like I wanted to cry. It was SO moving. Now, I've searched online for Gaelic sayings and phrases before and have never come up with a lot, so I was floored to find the song's translation on sing365.com. The lyrics are amazing on their own, but I URGE YOU to listen to the actual song as well. So without any further ado, first in Irish, then in English, here's Brid Og Ni Mhaille, by The Corrs. Is a Bhríd Óg Ní Mháille'S tú d'fhág mo chroí cráite'S chuir tú arraingeachaAn bháis trí cheartlár mo chroíTá na mílte fear i ngráLe d'éadan ciúin náireachIs go dtug tú barr breáchtacht'Ar Thír Oirghiall más fíorNíl ní ar bith is áilleNá'n ghealach os cionn a' tsáileNá bláth bán na n-airneBíos ag fás ar an droigheannÓ siúd mar bíos mo ghrá-saNíos trilsí le breáchtachtBéilín meala na háilleachta'Nach ndearna riamh claonIs buachaill deas óg mé'Tá triall chun mo phósta'S ní buan i bhfad beo méMura bhfaighidh mé mo mhianA chuisle is a stóirínDéan réidh agus bí romhamsaCionn deireanach den DomhnachAr Bhóithrín Dhroim SliabhIs tuirseach 's brónachA chaithimse an DomhnachMo hata I’ mo dhorn'S mé ag osnaíl go trom'S mé ag amharc ar na bóithre'Mbíonn mo ghrá-sa ag gabhail ann'S í ag fear eile póstaIs gan í bheith liom'S í ag fear eile póstaIs gan í bheith liomTranslationOh Bríd Óg O'MalleyYou have left my heart breakingYou've sent the death pangsOf sorrow to pierce my heart soreA hundred men are cravingFor your breathtaking beautyYou're the fairest of maidensIn Oriel for sureNo spectacle is fairerThan moonbeams on the harborOr the sweet scented blossomsOf the sloe on the thornBut my love shines much brighterIn looks and in statureThat honey-lipped beautyWho never said wrongI'm a handsome young fellowWho is thinking of wedlockBut my life will be shortenedIf I don't get my dearMy love and my darlingPrepare now to meet meOn next Sunday eveningOn the road to Drum Slieve'Tis sadly and lonelyI pass the time on SundayMy head bowed in sorrowMy sights heavy with woeAs I gaze upon the bywaysThat my true love walks overNow she's wed to anotherAnd left me forlorn
