WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

another one bites the dust

Have I ever mentioned my sincere love for *"The Last Waltz"*? Directed by Martin Scorsese, it's hands-down the best music documentary of all time, and even better - it's got tons of amazing concert footage intermingled with some great interviews. The concert footage (most of the disc) is from *The Band*'s last show (*The Band*, of course, having been back-up for *Bob Dylan*, *Neil Young*, etc.). In addition to a TON of amazing songs that they perform on their own, they get help from *Bob Dylan*, *Eric Clapton*, *Van Morrison*, *Neil Young*, *Joni Mitchell*, *Muddy Waters*, *Ringo Starr*, *Neil Diamond*, *Ronnie Hawkins*, *Emmylou Harris*, and ...oh, a few others that I always get mixed up with. And *Lawrence Ferlinghetti* reads a poem onstage and....sigh. I always say that if I had a time machine I'd go to Woodstock, but this show is a (very) close second. Anyhow, I've always had this huge, monstrous thing for *Levon Helms* (the drummer and vocalist on a lot of the tracks). I mean, not now. But in the time-machine sense of the word, I want his babies. So today, I see this news link from Rolling Stone (bleh) about this concert that took place IN HIS HOUSE. the article is "here":http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/12870356/the_band_drummer_levon_helm_rambles_on?source=music_news_rssfeed. In it, the author describes the EXTREMELY intimate nature of a concert that Helms put on himself at HIS HOUSE in Woodstock. Tickets were about $200 (I had $200!!! Where was I???) and apparently, it was completely amazing. **huge sigh.**I am thoroughly depressed now. I could have GONE. I mean, maybe not ACTUALLY, if you want to be picky about the logical side of things, but in a technical sense - in that I was actually ALIVE at the time - I could have GONE. This is like the time that *Elliott Smith* played at MaCRock (Mid-Atlantic College Radio Festival in Harrisonburg, VA at JMU - check it the fuck out) mere HOURS from my house and I had no idea. And then I moved up to H-burg and was regaled with tales of how he played at my favorite coffee bar and plus, did we mention that you missed *FUGAZI* too? FAREWELL DREAMS.But despite my sadness, at least I can go home from work and watch *The Last Waltz*, easily one of my favorite things ever.Um, go watch it.youtube (which never was before) has apparently been blocked on our company computers, as i just discovered first-hand, or else i'd totally put up a video or something.
