I was painting my husband's office last night and decided to log on to Pandora on his computer. I was in the mood for one of my favorite band's Red House Painters. So I pulled up the Pandora station. I was enjoying the mellow station for about 6 songs. Then suddenly Thom Yorke's voice was coming out of the speakers, doing a live version of Fake Plastic Trees. I completely understand the genius of Radiohead, I do. But I have to say Yorke's off-key strangely whiney version of this song embodies what I have never liked about them. You may find this preference strange coming from someone who is besotted with the "sadcore" stylings of Mark Kozelek, who could arguably be called more whiny at times than Thom Yorke. But I would take any of Kozelek's projects over a Radiohead album any day. If anybody can explain this to me I'm happy to listen. But next time I'm on pandora I will be asking for my RHP station, hold the Radiohead.
