Lily Allen, Eden Sessions, July 18, 2007

WHAT a difference a day makes. After Amy Winehouse's sullen performance on Tuesday, Lily Allen was a breath of fresh air at her Eden Sessions gig on Wednesday.
Support act Mark Ronson was the best cover band you'll ever likely to see with his funking up of indie classics Pretty Green by The Jam and Stop Me if You've heard this one Before by The Smiths.
They also did a cracking version of the Futon's Valerie, singer Talia vastly surpassing the version Amy Winehouse had massacred the night before.
Literally bouncing on to the now familiar strains of LDN, Lily Allen started how she meant to go on, to have a bloody good time and ensure the audience did to, a striking difference from the night before.
Clearly impressed with the "beautiful" venue, Lily instantly established a rapport with the audience telling them they were the most up for it crowd she'd had for a long time and she needed a drink to calm her nerves as she was trembling.
With only one album under her belt there was a bit of a worry that we would be presented with a lot of filler but we weren't. The new songs sounded good including one that had a dig at her arch nemesis, Girl's Aloud's Cheryl Tweedy, and another featured Lily rocking out by playing on a pink guitar. She could only play one chord "When I come back again I'll have learnt another one."
There was a good pick of covers including two songs by The Specials and the Kaiser Chief's Oh My God for which Mark Ronson and his entire band joined her.
And of course there were also all the hits, Smile, Alfie, Everything's Just Wonderful, with the male members of the audience, if you'll excuse the pun, firmly put in their place about the size of their manhood in the introduction to Not Big. Apparently bigger is better, huge in fact.
While Lily has the slightest of voices in reality it certainly sounded big at Eden and her feelgood songs full of urgency and life were just right for this venue.
Again one of the most memorable gigs of the Eden Sessions but this time for all the right reasons. Thanks Lily, for a great party.
