amy-02Photo by Ned Rosen. http://louchelab.com/People with body dysmorphic disorder have a distorted or exaggerated view of how they look and are obsessed with actual physical characteristics or perceived flaws, such as a certain facial feature or imperfections of the skin. They often think of themselves as ugly or disfigured. People with body dysmorphic disorder often have problems controlling negative thoughts about their appearance, even when reassured by others that they look fine and that the minor or perceived flaws aren't noticeable or excessive."Many of the changes to your breasts following implantation may be cosmetically undesirable and cannot be reversed." -FDA pamphlet, 2004http://www.implantinfo.com/banda4/problemindex.htm A 2001 U.S. study found an increased risk of suicide among women who had breast implants. Moreover, it found that women with breast implants killed themselves four times more often than women who had other types of plastic surgery.

  2. Lola the Car Chick says They recommend that the plastic surgeons do a little psychiatric evaluation of the patients. But having a plastic surgeon practicing psychiatry makes about as much sense as asking a psychiatrist to perform your surgery.

  4. Lola the Car Chick says A lot of women who have issues with image and self-esteem are using self-portraiture as a form of therapy. I know of several who say they cried the first time they posted a photo of themselves in public. But they are now developing an appreciation for the different facets of their characters-- of what lay beneath, essentially-- through photography. It is trendy nowdays to dismiss self-portraiture as narcissistic-- but I highly recommend it to anyone. I think it represents an opportunity to go beyond the comparison of oneself with homogenized imagery that commodifies women, and develop a new dialectic of Selfhood.

  5. rollerskatejamms says Elective plastic surgery is a joke. There's no good reason for it.

  6. Lola the Car Chick says It is one thing to partake in superficial improvements to ones appearance. It is another thing to risk your life for it. Breast implants don't make women multi-orgasmic. They can radically decrease a woman's breast sensitivity. So the only enhancement is the pleasure she might feel in being perceived an object of desire. This preoccupation with giving rather than receiving gratification, it's focus on the experience of the "other" rather than oneself, and the passivity involved in this exchange, is fundamental to the theory of female sexual objectification. How much are some women willing to lay on the altar in sacrifice for male attention, approval, and acceptance? The answer, unfortunately, is everything. Nothing is sacred. And this is part of the reason why women in our society receive so little respect. The desperation, the obvious lack of self-worth, the fanatic martyrdom-- that leads women to such excesses-- is difficult to comprehend. And for what noble goal? Are they as willing to risk their lives fighting for their ideals? For their liberty? For their equality? For their independence? No. But to masochistically inspire a multitude of erections? Hell, yes. This is where most people become confused about Feminism and sexuality. Feminism is not anti-sexual. It's just anti-irrational. "Dew yew like ma bawdeeeeee?" RIP Anna Nicole. Let's hope you are the end of an era.

  7. Lola the Car Chick says "I adore being operated on. I feel wonderful in clinics. I love the feeling of general anesthetic—falling into this black hole and knowing I'm being altered as I sleep." -Lolo Ferrari, European porn-actress. "All this stuff has been because I can't stand life. But it hasn't changed anything." Lolo Ferrari: died March 5, 2000, at age 37. "All the fame and plastic surgery in the world never made Lolo truly happy. Ferrari was known to suffer from severe depression and anxiety—two conditions that often accompany Body Dysmorphic Disorder, a rare psychological condition characterized by an irrational conviction that one's body is never attractive enough, which some experts believe Lolo suffered from. She turned to alcohol, as well as antidepressants and other pills. Thus, to many observers, it seemed no surprise that Lolo had overdosed on prescription medications and finally become the lifeless blow-up doll she so desperately wanted to resemble. However, questions soon began to emerge as to whether or not the death was intentional. At first, Vigne told authorities that his wife would never have committed suicide, but he later changed his story. According to (her husband) Vigne, Lolo had been planning her own funeral soon before her death, visiting a funeral director and picking out a white coffin in which she hoped to be buried with her favorite teddy bear. French authorities, however, have a different theory. In late February 2002, almost two years to the day after Lolo's demise, Vigne was arrested on suspicion of homicide." -Hustler Magazine, Sept. 2003

  8. Lola the Car Chick says BTW, I disagree with Hustler Magazine that Body Dysmorphic Disorder is "rare" and would hardly consider their publication experts in any matter that concerns women generally. "In one study of atypical depression, BDD was more than twice as common as OCD, and in another it was more common than many other disorders, including OCD, social phobia, simple phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, bulimia nervosa, and substance abuse or dependence." -World Psychiatry, Official Journal of the World Psychiatric Association

  9. Lola the Car Chick says "How did this practice of self-mutilation, masquerading as a search for beauty, become not only a society-sanctioned addiction but a $15 billion industry? Economic greed and insecure women are such a potent combination that plastic surgery now rivals, economically, the far less disingenuous, much-criticized pornography industry. Which one, you have to wonder, hurts women more? Kuczynski connects the two, proposing that the desire to look like a porn star is one of the most prevalent motivations for the society ladies who indulge in the most cosmetic surgery." - "Review: Beauty Junkies", The New York Times. October 20, 2006.

  10. BarrieSutcliffe says Another load of good points. I especially like your points about why so many women receive such little respect - I have been going over this thought for months now and you've put it into words rather well! A relative of mine had BDD back in the 70's (or something similar, the diagnosis did not exist then) when no one knew what the hell it was all about. He was also gay, so of course the combination of these two factors landed him in an institution. For how long is unknown though - I don't know much more than that as my family is pretty tight-lipped about it. I believe society has a certain bearing on the severity of certain mental disorders. I'm sure many people have the capability to have BDD, but only THIS society can truly help the disorder attain its full power. Otherwise the neurosis would probably take hold in different forms. I know for sure that this society's "everything's going to kill you!" attitude has fostered a nice little niche for my own OCD to burrow in, which poses me great challenges all the time. That being said though, I would not suspect that my uncle's affliction would have anything to do with the media. Not only was he male, but when and where he lived at the time did not have any significant media pressures towards males. Just the ol' familial craziness I guess.
