WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

To Punk or Not to Punk

Posted over 2 years ago
One of my favorite MOGgers, "*Cbertsch*":http://mog.com/cbertsch came back to us recently, & as always - his posts really make me think. He delves deep into his thoughts & philosophies... I always dig that. Makes me use more bits of the "lge" brain... exercise is good for that organ. His latest post - "*Cbertsch*":http://mog.com/cbertsch/blog_post/86219 is the post of the day & in my opinion, *+very deserving+*. I've always listened to music I've thought to have punk tendencies, but sometimes I was told by true afficionados that I was way off... I saw this reaction showcasing a true passion for the style & beliefs of a group they associated with moreso than I did. & that's not to say I didn't believe in those ideals. When it comes to music, there really isn't a style I don't/won't listen to, I want to be as open as is humanly possible - I don't want to miss out on anything musically speaking & otherwise. So their discounting of my thoughts didn't disuade me, nor did it upset me, I am very passionate about my feelings/thoughts/beliefs - maybe you noticed ;). We all have our opinions. In fact, I just decided - hey, I can find some aspects of punk in +The Pixies+, the same way I see pop in +The Clash+. Does this discount either band - not for me ? ! So my man Cbertsch posts the question I've never been able to nail down, but one that has always made me stay true to what I think & in my own way, causes me to go against the *"norm"*. *Go read his post, sil vous plait & mercy buckets ;)* I listen to +The Buzzcocks+ & +Stiff Little Fingers+ They are two favorites of mine, _PUNKILY SPEAKING_ ;) & I listen to +The Pretenders+ & +Rage Against the Machine+, also favorites & though they may not be classified as "punk" - I feel they have enough of the *punk* asthetic to showcase a punk mentality that I really love. As RAGE would say: "FIGHT THE WAR, F@CK THE NORM, NOW I GOT NO PATIENCE, SO SICK OF COMPLACENCE". Certainly - RAGE's song lengths could, for some, take them out of the running for _punk_. Again - so be it. But for me - they are always fighting against inequality, inhumanity, political agendas that screw with the masses. I think this is one of the best aspects of PUNK.So, for my musical interlude, I have three bands... First, my Northern Irish lads from my grandfather's own Belfast, me Pap would have loved them for their message (if not for their volume) ;) - he really was a *music junkie* himself. So the first goes out to "*_my_ Charlie, me PAP*" & to "*Rawkkiddo*":http://mog.com/Rawkkiddo one of my favorite punks, one who never discounted my thoughts ;) +*STIFF LITTLE FINGERS : SUSPECT DEVICE*+The woman I wanted to grow up to be when I first started watching MTV: Chrissy Hynde... "*chucky*":http://mog.com/chucky & "*Anna*":http://mog.com/Anna , this one is or you... my rockin sisters ;)*+THE PRETENDERS : TATTOOED LOVE BOYS+*And the men who really pissed me off all those years ago when instead of playing a set at Lollapalooza in Philly, they protested Tipper Gore & the PMRC, naked & with feedback - Funny what a little maturity & a broader perspective brings - This is now one of the reasons I LOVE them as much as I do. *+RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE : KNOW YOUR ENEMY+*This last video goes out to "*Kat3260*":http://mog.com/kat3260 , "*RaG3aH0liC*":http://mog.com/RaG3aH0liC , & last but not least, as these three are equally too cool for school in my book, "*Lyrikhan*":http://mog.com/Lyrikhan *A little Maynard never hurt RAGE ! Just as a little PUNK never hurt a band :)*

  1. RaG3aH0liC says Thanks for the love LGE. That video rules due to the flying hug at the end. Maynard has got to talk to the bitches....even as I post this there are four sets of male genitalia that I don't need to see staring at me. eeep! I don't love rage like that.

  3. Jonh Ingham says Punk is an attitude. Paul Simenon said that. He's right. So Chrissie is definitely a punk, even when she's being as sweet as 'Brass In Pocket'. Tho I do love Tattooed Love Boys - wotta concept! OK, I'm off to read Cbertsch

  5. cbertsch says I've been thinking about how punk is defined for so long that my head aches. As is the case with other aesthetic categories there will never be a scientific test to determine punkness. So what we get are battles over the boundaries of the category. In the case of punk, though, it's especially difficult because the term has been applied to so much outside the realm of popular music. In that regard it functions much like "The Blues" as a category.
I do think that length would be a common denominator in many definitions of punk, because first-generation punk was reacting so savagely to the perceived excesses of early 70s "prog rock." I've heard people over the years complain that Sonic Youth is too prog or say that Tortoise is an example of what happens to people who start out interested in punk but then get to full of themselves. That said, I'll take Tortoise over most of the ??Maximum Rock and Roll?? punk out there for sustained listening pleasure.

  6. 2Serenity says My punk knowledge is limited but I really enjoy it when I have the chance to listen. Especially when I am a funky pissy mood. My favorite group was The Ramones. I think I saw them on American Bandstand growing up. They represented a sound I did not hear at home and that is why I gravitated towards them because sometimes I got sick of all the classical and jazz but I have learned to appreciate it all. I was more of a fan in the early 80s and that is probably because all of the kids in my school loved The Ramones too. Remember this!! I do!! This was my anthem as a kid! We did not have cable back then so I have no idea how I know this song. This is from the youtube site: - In the early 1980s not everyone had cable TV. In Los Angeles a sort of new wave American Bandstand was the alternative to cable's MTV. It was called MV3. This syndicated music video show featured (1) the latest music videos as a backdrop to (2) local dancers and (3) lip synched performances by artists such as X, The Plimsouls, Lords Of The New Church, Oingo Boingo, Berlin, The Bangles, Missing Persons, English Beat, Thomas Dolby, Psychedelic Furs, Adam Ant etc.; artists that were currently being played on KROQ (Los Angeles). Three hosts included then KROQ DJ, Richard Blade, "comedian?" David Maples, and "actress?" Karen Scott. Trivia: Blade and some of the regular dancers also appeared in an episode of "Square Pegs". Bret Easton Ellis mentions MV3 in his book "Less Than Zero". (more) (less) --

  7. Lyrikhan says I'm sure most would agree that punk is as much attitude and ideal (or lack of, I suppose) as it is a musical form. There is no doubt that Rage has some punk in em'. Testament to that is them covering The Clash's "Clamp Down" or Minor Threat's "In My Eyes" or even their own punk anthem "Tire Me". Punk is raw energy and gives a finger to establishment, so therefore it needs no true classification....if you feel it...then there it is. Thanks for the shout out Liz...now tell them boys to put those things away!

  9. goodmusiconly says To punk or not to punk -- what kind of question is that? *Rhetorical* I hope! Just look at what "yours truly":http://mog.com/goodmusiconly/blog_post/62042 started around these here parts :)P First off, hats off to you for posting "Tattooed Love Boys," one of my allll time fave songs from Mizz Hynde and crew (next to "Precious"). I don't need to elaborate too much as Jonh and Lyrikahn nailed it. But speaking purely from a musical standpoint, I don't think there's any need for people to pigeon hole the punk genre just because it doesn't fall tidily within the original style that emerged in the late 70s ... heck, even Wiki's list of fused punk subgenres is big enough to get Jello Biafra tongue tied ... there's garage punk, glam punk, hardcore, skate punk, cowpunk, pop punk, celtic punk, punkabilly, ska punk, yada yada yada ... (as long as Justin Timberlake steers well clear of all that I'm happy punking out every day of the week) ... in other words, insert fitting adjective here, ____punk. It can be as loosely or tightly defined as any one person chooses for himself, but when it comes down to it, punk, at its heart, is an attitude.

    Punk on Lizzie! :)

  13. Augusts1 says I've not ever been a big punk aficianado cause it's too raw most of the time for my sensebilities. I do enjoy it from time to time though. What gets me is when an artist has a punk background & then go & do music that is the most poppiest shite on the planet. You mentioned Pixies being punk but I don't really consider them to be even though "Come On Pilgrim" & "Surfer Rosa" are fairly raw but the attitude was never there I think. Don't get me wrong, I adore them & have all their cds but they just never struck me as punk. With that being said I guess I'd have to agree w/Erin that there is all types/styles of punk. It's a label, a genre, which never adequately describes the music's spectrum. And my, Mr. Morello is quite endowed. I'm sure he has quite a bit of fun when he gets his RAGEon, lmfao! I'd only seen a censored pic before w/their naughty bits covered, so thanks for posting that Lizzie! Seeing naked male penises doesn't make me squirm, since it's a fact of life. Never understood why other guys get all freaked out over seeing another man's genitals. Most of those guys watch hardcore porn anyway so they have to watch an erect dick doing the deed, so it just seems silly to make a fuss about flacid ones ya know?!

  14. Hmmm says If song length disqualifies RAGE from being punk, then that leaves me wondering, if all the other ideals are still in place, then maybe this is just a natural evolution of the genre?

  16. darmuzz says I've been listening to The Pretenders first album this week too. & long live SLF! I am most familiar with their Nobody's Heroes album, and I just recently bought Hanx on CD. Not sure I feel the need to define punk (or indie, or emo) but there is a long tradition of protest music outside of punk. So for me, Rage fits in there. Personally I love punk and I appreciate the songs short & snappy...3 minutes max.

  17. Lizziegreeneyes says *lucy_its:* yeah... I hope when I _*do*_ grow up, there may still be hope ;) Though Ani DiFranco's never really been comfortable with it - she rocks the punk in her brand of folk. *August:* put your gloves on ;) I said, & I quote... "I can find some aspects of punk in The Pixies" SOME ASPECTS OF PUNK. They have maybe two songs over a 3 minute mark, they have a hard sound, they never conformed. Never said they were punk - just that they have certain aspects that I think are Punklike in nature... word twister ;P Labels are bullshite... Erin is dead on ! (as are you). & I am so pleased you didn't stress the nudie pic - I wrestled with putting it up there - thought it might upset a few peeps - not just male - but then I figured, if I had to listen to freakin loud ass feedback for 15 minutes while they stood nekkid on stage - a little pic won't hurt nobody - notice - NO FEEDBACK - well, unless you consider this feedback ;) I have way too much fun with you August. *Hmmm:* hellz yeah !!! No more labels... :) & good point on evolution - lord knows - rock around the clock tonight would not be considered RAWK & yet, at it's time, it was very risque - way out there - going against the grain :) *googoo:*I still love seeing her in that diner waitress getup - black kohl enveloping her eyes to the point you can barely see them - she's so hardcore. *darmuzz:* I love when our great minds think alike :) & you're right, definitions mostly serve to confine. That was kinda what I was trying to say with this post... so much of what I listen to bleeds into another & the lines are so blurred that all I really care about is what I like -which is almost anything really :) Even nekkid RAGErs ;P

  31. ciphermedia says Loves me some Chrissie - and she's really rockin' here! Cbertsch's post, and your post here Lizzie, touch on something I've been thinking on recently about 80's music and the wholesale dismissal it gets (musically speaking) as a decade from a few moggers (youngsters mostly ;)) whose posts I've read. I've got something brewin' but I'm still collecting my thoughts, and links. BTW, PUNKILY SPEAKING!! May have to be sending 30% your way too. (That's if we can agree on reciprocal rates...)

  32. Lizziegreeneyes says *Jonathan:* I think we can work something out !!! It's sooooo true about the 80s dismissal. Hell, I even had friends in college, (so they are my age - for shame), who couldn't understand why I loved Alan Parsons Project, Kajagoogoo ;) or Adam Ant... my list is endless really - sure some of the music wasn't that thrilling -but that is the case EVERY year & EVERY decade. To paint such a broad generalization (not a generalization about broads) ;) regarding anything is to discredit something that someone loves. *Looking forward to your percolated post !!!* Kajagoogoo's Too Shy - one of my favorite one hit wonders... that video still kills me ;) But this morning I am in need of more Chrissy... gonna use my side step, anyone want the special !!!

  33. Cody B says As I said over at cbertsch's about Punk, I can't define it, but I know it when I hear it. I am very interested in the 80's discussion cipher. I'm an oldster here, but I thought the decade, as a whole, did not rock.
