Young Love - Ain't in Grand ???
-
Artist:
Ahhhhh Jeff Husted. My first "real" boyfriend - you know the boy… can't say "I love you", but can write I <3 You on the bottom of your KSwiss sneakers before you head to Phoenix for a wedding. Was my first real kiss too… definitely not my best kiss (I walked away with bruises thanks to my braces & his hard mouth pressure)… no, the good kisses, those would come later, but he beat out Jason Hocheimer who licked the whole side of my face cuz I wanted nothing to do with his tongue in my mouth ;)
Husted & I shared a love of arthouse movies, of writing, of doing well in school (he more than me) & most importantly a love of music. Prior to dating me though - he really didn't listen to a wide selection of tunes. He liked R.E.M., Def Leppard (no jokes kiddies - I likes me some Leppard too), Led Zeppelin & Jethro Tull. I showed him the many different ways you could take those few artists/bands & find countless more that granted he may or may not like - but at least it gave him more variety :) He soon became immersed in The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths though he fought that band at first… "Lizzie, seriously - who sings a song about a girlfriend in a coma, or shoplifters uniting ?!?" But with Everyday is Like Sunday, he began to understand the genius of Morissey & he began to check out the sheer brilliance of Morrisey coupled with one of my all time favorite guitarists, Ladies & Gentlemen, Mr. Johnny Marr (screaming & fainting from the audience).
I do have two thank yous that go out to Mr. Husted, at least - from way back in the day. You see, I unleashed a musical monster when I got the kid hooked on some of the bands I really loved. He's been schooling me ever since, though I think now we're pretty well tied - I still hear about new bands through our mutual best friend Kate & they are as many times as not - ones I've never heard of, but totally understand why they've managed to hook Jeff. He's become the forefront aficionado of all things girl band/female singer/songwriter & I gotta say I really love that about him. It never fails - I will always lean more toward the male vocals & he to the female… so when our signals cross (rare as it may be these days) he's got something fabulous for me to check out & I hopefully find a few that he will dig as well !!!
The first thank you is for the song Reflections. You see, Husted was a HUGE Dana Delaney fan & he absolutely adored China Beach. Reflections was the intro song for the show & it became a song that I still love to hear on a regular basis. I imagine the helicopters flying overhead & myself standing next to Marge & Dana readying ourselves for the injured & dead at our camp in Vietnam.
A song that means even more to me though is All My Love - Led Zeppelin. I've never been a huge listener of Led. & there is nothing wrong with them as a band - in fact - most of the time - when they come on my iPod or on the radio I am blown away by them, they just never were a constant thing for me. The song All My Love was our silly little love song. It wasn't the countless times we'd play it before we broke up that makes it so much a part of my musical history & imprint. It's the one time after we broke up that makes it a song that will always be one of the closest to my heart.
He was my first love, remember, so our song could have gone either way - it could have become a most hated song, or a song that lives with me forever. Husted found a way for it to go from one to the other in a matter of moments.
It was my 16th birthday & a surprise one at that. Brian Laidlaw - one of my best high school friends before losing touch pre-college threw the party for me & invited all our friends, this included Jeff Husted. It had been months since we broke up - but the wounds for me were still really close to the surface. When I saw him there - trust me - I was STUNNED. He was making his typical high school boy comments through the party - only way more intelligent sounding - the kid was brilliant - as he has remained. He would every once in a while head to the stereo to play a Jethro Tull song - he knew how I hated "Aqualung" & all the boys at the party started singing SNOT IS RUNNING DOWN HIS NOSE ;)
But later in the evening, he was getting calls from the boys to play some song I don't remember & instead he said - no, I gotta hear something else. He went into his pocket & put an unidentified tape into the cassette player & All My Love began playing through the speakers - before it started though - he looked over at me & held my gaze for a good 15 - 20 seconds.
We finally found a way to ease back into our comfortable friendship. All due to a boy standing in front of a girl - & with music, asking her to forgive him & listen to their song together one last time.
We never talked about that night - not in the years, many years since - but I have a pretty good idea he knows what it meant to me - I can't be sure it was the same for him - but I will say for certain - we had a good time - we did have that.
The video below is actually Ween doing a hella cover of the song - kinda wanted to add a different spin to it. Is it because the memory of the original is still to precious... maybe. But again - you gotta give a little slack - this was a first love kiddies :)
SO............. what are your first love/first love song memories ?!? TIME TO DISH KIDS !!!

Did we go to the same High School? or did millions of other weird kids growing up in America have identical experiences growing up?
First Love? Song? It's funny, I always kept my love life (can I call it that - it was only high school) and music separated. The music was too sacred.
Maybe, it wasn't until my last girlfriend in high school that I even shared the same musical tastes. Our song would have been Genesis, by Jorma Kaukonen.
Ongoingly made a nice ference to it here.

How Lloyd Dobbler-esque!
'nother great memory Lizzie!
Aw lizzie...What a great memory. :) I bet that book you are working on will be great!
I immediately thought of Lloyd Dobbler too, cbw! It could be because I have that poster on my wall.
my first love song -> More than Words by Extreme -> in a similar fashion, I did my own rendition because I couldn't sing that high, and brought my lady love to tears because it was about a year after we broke up -> and so the boy I was in high school will always live on in my heart, playing that song for her and shedding a tear too, we both loved each other so much, but couldn't give up what we both were meant to do, we just HAD to go seperate ways ->
LIZZIE -> great memory lane post -> and WEEN did a spectacular version of All of my Love -> Mr. Husted was/is lucky to have you in his life!
Mmm, smell the teenage hormones! Thanks again for sharing, sis.
Mine is too weird and convoluted to get into in great detail here. Let's just say that the firl asked me to the winter formal to get revenge on her ex, who was my best friend. Many surreal adventures ensued, but we (the girl and I) became close friends, although I would have liked to have been more. I remember sitting in the back of a friend's car with her, rocking out to her new shiny cassette, feeling my little heart go pitter-pat, and her being quite oblivious:
Schlock city, I know. Love makes up do, and listen to, silly thing sometimes.
Lizzie, I truly envy your way with words. Your easy conversational style sparkles with wit, humor, and delightful insight.

sweet memories, Lizzie. I wish I had love songs to share, but mostly I remember the songs that made me cry after the love was gone. :(
Speaking of Johnny Marr, heard him on the radio last night with his new band The Cribs. Genius is still flowingthrough his fingers.
As to "first song", I have very happy memories of making out through both sides of Jefferson Airplane 'Surrealistic Pillow' with the delicious and beautiful Kris Ebbighausen. 40 years later we're still talking.
A song from a Greek rock band, the translation of the its name being Holes and translation of the song title being Schizophrenics In Love. Said song title even ended up carved on a ring {don't panic, it wasn't a ring ring}. :)
A love that started in a mosh pit of Trypes. Nuff said :)
I do remember listening to Garbage's #1 Crush on more than one unhappy occasions ;)
@lakposhti... wish we had gone to the same school - for some reason, as sacred as music has always been for me - there are few songs I've lost due to lost loves... Music is my actual first love I guess... I refuse to let it get tarnished by bad breakups :) Will head to the link ASAP :)

@DaleBRO...I adore Heart - even cheeezy Heart & I had that love too... it's a heart breaker for sure - but there is no shame on my MOGpages - you know that... get over here & give me a ::bigsquooshyhug::

@lakposhti... your comment made that post friend... Loved it :) Hot Tuna no less :)
LIZ -> no worries, it would never take away from my first memory, but add another special chapter in the bliss that is More than Words, we'd be the first MOG duet to be signed by Geffen Records!
And yes, that girl I speak of was so beautiful at 15 with her mouth full of blue braces, oh so beautiful! haha
Man oh man Tyler - I have such a thing for a guy with a mouth full of metal... takes me all the way back :)
no wonder we get along so well..."coupled with one o my all time favorite guitarists, Ladies & Gentlemen, Mr. Johnny Marr (screaming & fainting from the audience)."
aww Lizzie. i'd have to dig deeper for the prom night stories but this one other "summer of love" story is easier to tell, from when i was 18 --
i cross-enrolled at a sister-university in another city for a summer and had a two-week crazy thing that ended with a very cold goodbye from me. i stayed an extra week hoping to see him again (and right my wrong goodbye) but i never did. i went home and was informed by my dormitory that the previous week a guy came at least once or twice everyday looking for me. gah!
music in this case was a hell lot of anything-but-romantic movies, like Babette's Feast and Das Boot, for some reason.
@Principal Vernon... you know it my friend :) Think it's partly why I get so many hall passes signed in the first place !!!
@Ilay... starcrossed love - a little more bitter than sweet no ?!?
youse got it, sis dear. Baz Luhrmann could totally make the movie. Romeo had long hair tho (aww this was in the nineties) so casting could be tricky...
