A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon a notice from WXPN offering up a free Matt Pond PA/Jesca Houp show... I didn't wait to get a concert buddy. A free show means I will find someone or I will go it alone... "*+blair+*":http://mog.com/satisfiedmind2 's jet was in the shop, "+*jameson*+":http://mog.com/jameson was otherwise engaged (heh) & "*+Katrina+*":http://mog.com/kat3260 was partying Halloween styley with "+*Will*+":http://mog.com/Lyrikhan & "*+RagIan+*":http://mog.com/RaG3aH0liC.*Deb*, the faithful concert buddy & bestest friend (man, I have dragged her to countless shows - but I know for certain she's thrilled I do), signs on to be my wingman & we were off on Saturday night after a quick goodbye to the cutest & most wonderful 10 month old ever.
The preshow prep consisted of purchasing a silver Sharpie (TM) & being certain to have John Mavroudis's gorgeous poster
from the show at the GAMH in San Francisco with me for signatures of Matt & Jesca. The drive was grand... all sorts of new music from MOGtiply friends & visions of horse & buggies & outlet shops along with the Showboat Motel & Motel6s that didn't look half bad really...We got to the venue, $3 to park for the evening - *SERIOUSLY !!!* Stood in line for about 10 minutes or so & then it was drinks in hand find a nice spot to plant ourselves for the evening. We had a great view of the stage, maybe 25 to 30 feet from the stage & slightly elevated. Unfortunately The Chameleon Club is still a smoking establishment so there were smokers to contend with (forgive the recently non-smoking lizzie... but when it's an enclosed & poorly ventilated locale - the smoke is an issue for me). Jesca Hoop takes the stage after an intro from one of the WXPN DJs (speaking of LIVE being an act that played The Chameleon Club - saw them there when I was still in high school & Mental Jewelry was the album on repeat in my car's tape player). She's lovely. A girl from LA who shares a quirky Bjork songwriting & performing aspect that I really tuned into on Saturday. She plays for about a half hour & truly impressed both myself & Deb, faithful partner in crime. The light guy should be commended - in a little club venue such as The Chameleon Club - it was rather impressive & added to the overall feel from Jesca's set (as well as Matt Pond PA's).About a half hour after Jesca leaves us (& signs my John Mavroudis poster), Matt Pond PA take the stage & light the place up with songs from the eps, and all the albums including a few from the latest Last Light... really wanted to hear Holiday Road... alas, it wasn't meant to be :)It was a fantastic night - even as Matt dealt with a shotty mic cable (duct tape is the item that holds the world together) the music swirled around me & is still presently swirling... That's his music for me... a swirl of melody & harmony, three guitars & interesting lyrics... really amazing.Got all but the drummer to sign the poster - looks fantastic - now I must get a poster frame & do it up right... this piece of art belongs on my walls. What a night...Thanks to blair & jameson for hooking me up with all sorts of jesca/Matt Pond PA goodness, thanks to John for an amazing poster & thanks to all the artists that keep me heading out to see shows... where would I be without music... a thought that I will not entertain.
