WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Maniacal & Jubilant Peace Restored to the State of MOG

Posted over 2 years ago
So last night... I started digging through some of my CD cases, before heading to bed really early (heh - try after 11pm) only to wake again this morning at 4:45am frickin clockwork I tell you. Apparently a full moon can cause restless sleep... hmmf, not sure bout that one - never seemed to have an issue before this month's moon cycle. As I pulled out Xymox's Phoenix (I know Dale - I am a doofus), some Psychedelic Furs & Bel Canto, I spied an album I haven't thought to listen to in YEARS... I mean +*AGES*+ years. 10,000 Maniacs *Blind Man's Zoo*. Still remember first time I heard Natalie Merchant - she was performing on SNL singing _*Like the Weather*_ off *In My Tribe*.But the song that has always had the deepest & most blissfully painful effect on me is *_Jubilee_*. I remember playing it over & over & over & over again. The string arrangements... the slow burn to a cacophonous & searing final act; It can still brings me to tears. Few songs have truly hit me as hard as this one. Once a violinist - any string arrangement (of as mighty & hauntingly beautiful proportion as this) has the ability to strip me bare.Course... I can't find it anywhere on the videos & if you know me - you know that my computer takes issue with converting the mp4s to mp3s, so uploading is not an option. Here are the lyrics... & if anyone has the mp3 & can post it in the comments -**PLEASE DO !!!!**_He fills the flower vases, trims the candle bases, takes small change from the poor box. Tyler has the key. He takes nail and hammer to tack up the banner of felt scraps glued together reading, "Jesus Lives In Me." Alone in the night he mocks the words of the preacher: "God is feeling your every pain." Repair the Christmas stable, restore the plaster angel. Her lips begin to crumble and her robes begin to peel. For Bible study in the church basement, hear children Gospel citing, Matthew 17:15. Alone in the night he mocks the arms of the preacher raised to the ceiling, "Tell God your pain."To him the world's defiled. In Lot he sees a likeness there; he swears this Sodom will burn down. Near Sacred Blood there's a dance hall where Tyler Glen saw a black girl and a white boy kissing shamelessly. Black hands on white shoulders, white hands on black shoulders, dancing, and you know what's more. He's God's mad disciple, a righteous title, for the Word he heard he so misunderstood. Though simple minded, a crippled man, to know this man is to fear this man, to shake when he comes. Wasn't it God that let Puritans in Salem do what they did to the unfaithful?Boys at the Jubilee slowly sink into brown bag whiskey drinking and reeling on their feet. Girls at the Jubilee in low-cut dresses yield to the caresses and the man-handling. Black hands on white shoulders, white hands on black shoulders, dancing, and you know what's more.Through the tall blades of grass he heads for the Jubilee with a bucket in his right hand full of rags soaked in gasoline. He lifts the shingles in the dark and slips the rags there underneath. He strikes a matchstick on the box side and watches the rags ignite. He climbs the bell tower of the Sacred Blood to watch the flames rising higher toward the trees. Sirens wailing now toward the scene..._As I can't post Jubilee... figured I could at least post a song of *PEACE* as the New Wave Wars have reached their untimely end (for now).

  5. Lizziegreeneyes says *Mang*: thought you were going to go with Because the Night... think she sings the heck out of that one... N Merchant has such a distinctive sound... distinctive vocals... I kinda burned out a little with Our Time in Eden... I was Blind Man's Zoo & prior for the most part... but they are like an old favorite T that was hiding in the back of the drawer or closet that you find & wear around for days on end afterwards... think they may go back to a minor constant rotation... it's been too long that I've been without this T ;) Thanks *Sunshine* great addition as well... Still waiting for Jubilee... :)

  8. poebegone says ditto, i have not thought about BMZ at all in ages. i do love Jubilee and Trouble Me. In My Tribe - Like the Weather, yes. even at the time when it was too popular it was overplayed, it had that (precisely) like-the-weather effect on me.

  9. Lizziegreeneyes says Always like the weather effect... nicely put !!!

  10. dachmo says I think all the women I've dated since 1987 have, in one way or another, been Natalie Merchant-ish. I still love women in sun dresses and combat boots.

  11. Lizziegreeneyes says *dachmo:* YOU are a WINNER & a STAR in my book !!! & that will always be a look that takes me right back in time... I actually saw it on a teen walking home with some friends last night... all tied up & taped up combat boots & a sundress with leggings... the more things change :)

  13. Dale says Uh oh, weight of expectations ... crushing ... me. GASP! I wish I could find the video of Natalie playing this song on Letterman, in a wedding dress, tossing a bouquet at the start. Many hipste men's fantasies were relived that night. Ah well, it's still a great song, and a lovely message: "I must be one of the wonders, God's own creation."

  14. Dale says OK, one more, 10,000 Maniacs without Natalie Merchant. The source song is so gorgeous it would be hard to foul up.

  15. Misstee says Never got her...although i also favored the 1940s rayon print dresses and doc martens look back then. Oy. I have a 'back then'....

  16. Lizziegreeneyes says *Dale:* love a video where she avoids dancing for the most part... she shouldn't dance (in my opinion), but I never did listen to them once she left... I also never picked up any of her solo stuff... as I said... I got overloaded with Nat Merch... Still, it was great listening to her today & to have Jubilee on my post... I am a happy teen all over again (shaaa as if) ;)
