Fortunately I've been able to see the band play live recently enough to hear several tracks from the new album. It wasn't intentional to review this late, but I've had a really difficult life already so anything new be it untimely or not is a welcome change.
This is a guitar driven album with a bus load of instruments worked in to capture melodic changes. Layered vocal harmony is everywhere as well.
Track 1 SEE THESE BONES
The song is a great opener and fun to hear. It brings the change the band will go on to showcase in full force, a change of emerging complexity that binds simple lyrics with abstract concepts.
Track 2 Whose Authority
The song is full of great appeal. It appeases the worry that sometimes creeps over you that you may never hear something good again. If it's all been done before then how come this song exists? It takes you away from that worry place so safely you feel right away that with this album your in good hands.
Track 3 Beautiful Beat
The standout on this song is the vocal moreso than the beat. It allows the listener to enjoy the album taking shape and is firming up to be a sweet time with ample headspace.
Track 4 Here Goes Something
The song is a sway along number with a lovely acoustic accompaniment and a departure from the buzz along format of previous albums.
Track 5 Weightless
The sound of this song though it's currently the most relevant with its inclusion on the Heros sdtk. sounds most like a track from THE WEIGHT IS A GIFT. The rush of sound escapes into a gentle piano/cello movement that is the ending.
Track 6 Are You Lightning?
The star of the song is the piano. The guitar sound is stellar. The vocals rise up and roll along reaching new heights and notes. It's a perfect song. The drums are at perfect pitch and maintain one of the steadiest tempos I've heard in a long time.
Track 7 I Like What You Say
Sometimes we hate the past more than we should because we're not ready to consider it gone. That said, for the Get Up Kids fans who have a void left to fill --this song and its inclusion on the John Tucker Must Die sdtk--works wonders.
Track 8 From Now On
The sound of the song is track 3&4 meet 7. There is an edginess that decides instead of compromising it'll just hang out awhile and see what works. The song fits the album well at this track number and the song stretches into the concept of the title of the album.
Track 9 Ice on the Wing
Yay! This is my favorite song since last November when they played it live in Virginia. The recorded version does not disappoint! I can see anyone who has likewise been a long time fan enjoying it. The Long Winters frontman Jon Roderick provides a quiet sort of appreciative vocal back-up.
Track 10 The Fox
The bass is strong and the intergalacitc musicicality teaches the weak at heart about recovery and purpose. Masterful classical composers dropped notes with the intention of making new music never forgetting that the song must resolve into itself. Leaving the heavy metal sound at the door this song begins its descent and resolution in fashionable time.
Track 11 The Film Did Not Go Round
Cool track.
The song is a lullaby without false hope. Cheers to the guy who wrote it, Glen Campbell right!? No wait, that's Wichita Lineman. Anyway it's worth checking the album credits and artwork on Lucky because it is a shared perspective.
To Your Health!
The only band I've seen live that played their album track for track has been this band from the UK. The album is skeleton. They openned for You Am I in Boston at the Middle East Upstairs. It was really awesome for the audience I think to play a show that way because I heard a song I liked and knew I'd go to the merch table to buy their album and then sorta immediately realized the 4th song they played was 4th on the CD. Everytime I listen to the album is like being back at the show! The band was really cool.
