My Report at Last!

Finally...I can sit down and take the time to tell you all about my adventure in the big city last Friday. As you may recall, when last I popped in it was still two days until the big night. Those two days passed like a flash, and before I knew it I found myself standing in the "Sunset Tavern":http://www.sunsettavern.com/ in Ballard, Washington. It's a rather dark and funky place, but I will admit that once inside I didn't pay too much attention to the actual place. Too much excitement! No sooner had I gotten in the door when I spied Brent Amaker - not hard to miss in his black suit and cowboy hat. In fact, all of the members of his band were easy to pick out of the crowd as they roamed through the bar. I didn't get a chance to talk to Brent until much later (after his show). As my friend and I wandered further into the bar and got our bearings, it didn't take long to find Amy Honey standing near the stage. Blue polka-dots! It was really great to finally meet her in person, after several months of talking back and forth online. What a sweetheart. If any of you ever have the chance to meet her...you're a fool if you don't!First up on the bill was the lovely and talented "Carolyn Mark":http://www.carolynmark.com/ - also a vision in polka dots (and rumor has it one hell of a tire changer). She and Amy travel together and play together (and one might even think they were sisters, if one didn't know any better). Carolyn belted out several great tunes, including The Wine Song and 2 Days Smug and Sober. Her songs have a nice country twang and a healthy dose of humor.
At last it was time for "Amy Honey":http://www.myspace.com/amyhunnie to play. Without being too gushy (which this whole post kind of is, anyhow), I just have to say she was awesome! Carolyn backed her up on keyboards and vocals. Amy sang lots of songs from her upcoming CD, Pioneer Woman, which wasn't available Friday due to the fact the box had been shipped to Oakland due to the highly dangerous and toxic sharpie markers inside! Apparently customs agents are working hard to save us from the dangerous sharpie fumes. I feel better knowing that. Anyhow, she played several of my favorite tunes, including Time Machine, Woods Hag, and the always upbeat yet dark . Her set was over way too soon!
Headlining the show for their CD release, was of course, "Brent Amaker and The Rodeo":http://www.myspace.com/brentamakerandtherodeo. Right off the bat I suspected they might have something of a cult following, and I was right. By the end of the evening I was ready to join the cult too. B.A.R.'s songs are about such things as whiskey, love, revenge, and whiskey - all with a driving snare beat and twangy guitars. Both the band and the crowd were raucous, and I'm not really sure who was having more fun. Brent sang the very romantic I Guess You Want to Die for his wife in honor of their anniversary, and several more songs from their new CD. After the show I had a chance to say hi to Brent, completing the mini Mog meetup. B.A.R. is off on the road soon, so check their site and be sure to catch them if they come to your town.I took a few pictures at the show..."the rest of them can be seen here":http://www.flickr.com/photos/librarianguish/sets/72157594554515808/.
Cheers!
