Last Saturday we drove down to Seattle to the Capitol Hill Block Party to see Sonic Youth.
Michael's old bandmate, Mark Ibold (from DUSTdevils), is now playing with them. It was an interesting day, to say the least.
When we arrived in the afternoon, I wasn't allowed to take my SLR camera into the event, as per the event sponsors. I fail to see how this could possibly matter, but I'm not going to get into that. We hung out, wandered around, and saw two decent bands. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and The Thermals. They were both all right, but not stellar.
It was very hot for Seattle - though not as hot as it's going to get this week!!! We pretty much took it easy, and dealt with the fact that access to iced coffee and the food we wished to eat were both in 21+ areas. Since we had Nolan with us, this was a bit of a pain.
Finally we hooked up with Mark Ibold, and had a great visit with he and Spiral Stairs - another Pavement guy who now lives in Seattle. I think Nolan especially got a kick out of just hanging around in a parking lot, listening to them chat about things. I can just hear him with his friends - "I got to hang out with a guy from Sonic Youth!"
We did get to briefly meet Kim Gordon - she is much shorter than I imagined! At this point there was a guy kind of lurking about, and I thought maybe he was somebody Mark knew. He appeared to be asking Kim for an autograph, but I stopped paying attention. A few minutes later this exchange occurred between he and Mark~
"So, you know Kim Gordon personally?"
"Yeah."
"Did you, like, go to high school with her or something?"
"No, I play in the band with her."
"OMG OMG I'm such an asshole! Sorry Sorry OMG!"
Turns our Mark thought he was with us, so was being a bit more polite than he would otherwise. A few minutes later he came back up to us, and asked if we knew when Sonic Youth was coming back to the bus. He was a little over-obsessed with Kim, and had some sort of impression of her and would Michael like to see it?
"That would be pointless."
I love my Michael. :-)
One of the greatest things that happened for me is Mark managed to procure a press pass for me. I got to bring my SLR in, AND take photos from the photography pit! What a great experience! I felt like I was in the big leagues - with the people with the giant lenses...
Here are the fine results of that endeavor... I think I did damn fine with my camera and 18-55mm kit lens.
And it was a hell of a good time!
Oh yeah, what a show!

Thank YOU, my dear...
Awesome!
Cool!
Sounds like such a fun time, and your pics came out great!!
Thanks Ray, thank Andrea! It was really a fantastic experience to be in the photo pit. No crush of the crowd - and rubbing elbows with the "big leagues" as it were.
Interestingly, they swept all of us photogs out after about 20 minutes, so it was back into the sardine pit!
Fantastic. I'm soooo jealous!
Grrrrreat post! And fab pix!
Thanks! It was an awesome time.
