Come Out of the Closet!

We're all disco dancers - don't deny it! But if you aren't too keen on the disco music of the 70's (let's face it, it can be a little scary), you can dance along with the Red Elvises instead.I had the good fortune to catch their show in December in Seattle with my brother. What a great time it was! They really put on a fun, high-energy show. The crowd was really into it. As is my way, I made sure to have a spot right in front. Between acts, however, when I dashed off to take a quick break, a guy tried to squeeze into the front. My brother defended my place, and he said something to the effect of, "I need to be in front, I am from Russia!" He was very funny, and liked having his picture taken ~One very happy RussianThere were a couple of guys next to me in front, and for a moment I thought I was going to relive an Ozomatli moment when one of them asked me before the show "Have you ever seen these guys?!!!" But he didn't have short term memory loss and ask me again, but he and his friend were too busy drinking beer for that to happen. His friend looked pretty out of it even before the Red Elvises started playing - but what amazed me the most is that despite the quanity of beer they drank, neither had to leave the front to use the bathroom... Bladders of steel, or...? Anyhow - here's superfan man and the hands of his friend, gripping the monitor for support ~IMG_0400Amusing, yes - but really the stars of the show were...the stars!Igor Yuzov, on guitar and most vocals - looks a bit like Elvis, and what a wonderful accent! Great suit, too!Igor YuzovIgor YuzovOleg Bernov, on bass balalaika (yes, it's a huge red triangle), and vocals. Always a big smile on his face, and check out those shiny shoes! Kind of a ham, too...Oleg BernovShnazzy shoes!Oleg BernovAnd then there's Elena Shemankova...wowza! A fiery redhead on keyboards and accordian...and wearing a wild tiger stripe dress. She was something else!Elena ShemankovaElena and IgorI love their music - a crazy mix of surf, rockabilly, and eastern European tunes. But then, everything I listen to these days has the Eastern Bloc feel...If they visit your town - DO NOT MISS THEM!!!Yes, I'm talking to you, comrade

  2. Librarianguish says Ha ha - yes, they are very Russian! The only member of the band that isn't is the drummer, who I wasn't able to really get any good pictures of. And that's not my brother - that's the friendly Russian guy (thus him looking like he'd fit right in) - he had me take his picture several times, including this one with my brother... IMG_0355 They were a fun band to see live, no doubt about that!

  5. Lady Miss Ian says Hey LA - thanks for sharing your night and your pix with us. I haven't seen these guys for a while, but they obviously haven't lost any of their shine. How he can heft that bass all night is a wonder. And if I'm correct, they make their own clothes/costumes. That zebra-striped suit makes me dizzy just looking at it.

  6. Librarianguish says The bass has a stand on it!!! So he doesn't actually have to hold it up - and for some reason, I don't really know why, I got the impression it actually wasn't that heavy. Maybe it isn't solid...? The zebra suit was rather mesmerizing!
