1990's Goodness

After _Nirvana_ and grunge and all that, popular music really splintered off and turned into a whole lot of bland, sound a like schlock, schlock we're still muddling through today for the most part. When this album came out, it was different though, than a lot of what was going on at the time, too bad it wouldn't last. I think this song pretty much sums up what was to be for these guys, a pity, cause _Sparkle and Fade_ was a good disc, I wore it out, too. Hmm, I think they had some other song, talkin about wantin to see some palm trees or somethin like that, dunno, that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

    chromearctic says give it another couple of years, much like the late 80's when you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a radio station or mtv playing a motley crue or m.c. hammer video, it eventually imploded and actual artists were given airtime on somewhat mainstream outlets. this meant i wasn't bottlenecked to late sunday nights recording 120 minutes and dependant on flipside magazine. ( hooray )! i was lucky enough to have 2 good college stations here though. 90.3 wriu ( university of rhode island ) and 95.5 wbru ( brown university ). bru lost some of it's edge, but riu is still commercial free and can pretty much play what they want. albeit in 3 hour blocks however. http://www.wriu.org/ slowly but surely though, the winds changed and like their late 80's counterparts, ( paula abdul and vanilla ice to name but 2 ) britney spears and others eclipsed what was mostly heard at the close of the '90's. feels like the same trend. thankfully though there's the net, so radio stations and music channels aren't the only games in town as far as exposure to a range of bands. there is however the whole romanticizing the past possibility but i remember clearly not bothering to watch MTV or radio stations because what they both offered sucked. It gave me a chance though to discover some music that was before my time like the Velvet underground, classic bowie, jimi hendrix, ect. your post summarizes the way i've felt for awhile.
