Arrest Warrant Issued For Billy Joe Shaver

Posted over 2 years ago
Police have issued arrest warrants for country singer Billy Joe Shaver after he shot and wounded a man outside a Texas bar, the entertainer's attorney said. After Shaver left a bar in Lorena on Saturday night, a drunk, aggressive stranger with a knife followed him into the parking lot, said attorney Joseph A. Turner of Austin. Shaver shot him in self-defense, he said.Police in Lorena, about 80 miles north of Austin, issued arrest warrants late yesterday (April 2) on charges of aggravated assault and possessing a firearm in a prohibited place, Turner said.Shaver attempted to surrender to Austin police last night but was not arrested because the police did not have a record of the warrants, said Turner, who accompanied Shaver. Lorena authorities could not be reached for comment early today."We're working with the police to get this resolved," Turner told the Associated Press. "His priority is dealing with this issue."The shooting occurred at 8:30 p.m. Saturday outside Papa Joe's Texas Saloon, according to Lorena police. The victim was shot in the cheek but was talking and alert afterward, police said. He was hospitalized.Turner declined to elaborate or say whether anything occurred inside the bar between Shaver and the victim. He said Shaver did not know the man.Shaver, who lives in Waco, about 15 miles from Lorena, rose to country music stardom in the 1970s.

  2. chucky says Insane. It does sound like a damn country song. On the other hand, it's a good thing he had that gun or the story would've been "Country singer Billy Joe Shraver gets knifed to death outside of a bar because restrictive gun laws kept him from exercising his 2nd amendment rights." Actually, that's kind of long for a headline. Also, it wouldn't occur to anyone but me to think of it in those terms. Nevermind. Heh.

  4. fairportfan says I wanna hear the whole story before i go all NRA on this one. I remember an NRA piece bragging on a little old granny lady (a cab driver) exercisinf her "2nd Amendment Rights" who shot a would-be robber dead. Well, when *TIME* investigated a little further, they found out that
    (A) Little Old Granny Lady did what all too many people did - she apparently assumed the gun was a magic wand and pulled it and didn't shoot it
    and
    (B) As i would have expected, the robber took it away from her and would have shot her with it, as happens every so often to people who "Gotta have a gun for self-protection" but haven't really thought it through
    but
    (C) Her gun was such a cheap piece of crap that it failed to fire
    whereupon
    (D) She tried grabbing it back
    and
    (E) During the struggle it *did* go off in a random direction
    which, luckily for her
    (F) Killed the Bad Guy.
I don't care what your "rights" are.
If you aren't *positive* you can and will shoot as soon as you pull that gun, you (and everyone around you, and everyone who might come up against it later after the Bad Guy takes it away from you) are better off without it.
You can run from a knife or a stick. You generally can't outtrun a bullet from your own gun.

  5. RGM says They do have training courses on how to handle a gun. And there have been I could have maybe used one in my lifetime...

  7. fairportfan says It is, however, a true story. Altough, come to think, i'm not absolutely sure that the final shooting was an accident - she may have done it on purpose. (And i did tell it in an exaggeratedly sardonic tone.) There is nothing that scares me more than an untrained civilian with a gun in their hand trying to "protect themself" from someone armed with a knife or a pointy stick (thank you, Monty Python). And, yes, you're quite right - there are courses (some of them even good courses - the same caveats as apply to "Defensive Driving Schools" and "DUI Schools" apply to gun schools, too - some are only in it for the quick buck). But i have pulled the trigger on what i had every reason to assume was a human being out there in the dark. I know just how hard it can be that first time, even when you have reason to believe that your life is threatened. Shaver apparently was willing to shoot - but he didn't do it right. The guy he shot is still alive. The FBI *used* to teach its Special Agents a firearms mantra (i don't know if they still do): "Only draw to shoot. Only shoot to kill." The majority of people probably can't do that. And if you can't, then you're more dangerous to yourself and everybody around you than you are to the Bad Guy. Personally, i don't own or carry a gun. I wouldn't mind if all guns could be destroyed. I spent enough time carrying a man's life in my hands in a year in Viet Nam in the Navy. But if you feel it's necessary for ypour peace of mind for you to (legally) carry - go for it. Just be aware that, if i'm around when you draw a gun you don't seem to know what to do with, i might well do my best to take it away for the safety of innocent me-standers.

  8. fairportfan says ANother story, guaranteed not true bu i was reminded: There was a young fellow in Kansas who fancied himself a gunfighter. He was fast and accurate, but he knew there were others faster. One day he was in a bar and he realised that the older man standing next to him at the bar was Wyatt Earp! "Mr Earp," he said, "I want to be a real fast gun, and I'm pretty fast, but maybe you could give me some tips." Earp looked him over. "Let me see your draw," he finally said. The kid said "Sure!", shucked his gun, and shot the piano player's beer off the top of the piano "Not bad," Earp said. "But if you tie your holster a bittle lower and tighter, it'll help." So the kid did that, whipped out his iron again, and shot off the piano player's hat. "Yeah! That really helped! Anythng else?" "Yeah. Cut a couple of notches in the leather, so you can start cocking the hammer a little faster, and can get your finger to the trigger faster." So the kid did, and i treally sped up his draw. He drew smooth as lightning and shot the cufflinks off the piano player. "Any more suggestions?" he asked Earp. "Yup. See that big barrel of axle grease? Dip your gun in it and get it coated good." "Will that make it slide outof the holster easier?" "Nope. But that way it mightr not hurt so much when Doc Holliday finishes playing piano and sticks it up your ass."

  10. chucky says fairport, yep. I don't disagree with most of what you said. I own a gun. My husband owns several. Safety has always been my first goal - meaning I've gotten training and I go to the range regularly to shoot - to ensure that I can do it properly and efficiently. I have a healthy respect for the inherent dangers and I don't take owning a gun lightly.
