For whatever reason, I simply cannot stomach Dave Matthews. I know what you mean about the Moody BLues though...I never caught on to that attraction.
vannatta says
Didn't Jeff Lynne produce a few tracks for them... ? I remember "Your Wildest Dreams" having an interesting sound at the time - but clearly not enough to save them from the worst band ever bin... not by a mile.

And yet every year in the rock press are people bitching that they are not considered for the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. People have been laughing behind their backs for 40 years now. Yes, one of the all-time worst.
Styx occasionally produced some great tracks featuring Tommy Shaw, but a lot of dreck. I cherry-picked 8 or so off of iTunes. The rest are pretty much garbage.

I never knew so many have such contempt for The Moodys! I think you're bein' unfair and overlooking a fair bit of good music. In the sub-genre of over-produced, pretentious, self-important pseudo-mystic rocknroll, they were acknowledged masters.
Lester Jonze says
masters indeed. Vannatta brings up an interesting sidebar. ELO could be in the top five, for sure. so...
1. Moody Blues
2. Styx
3. ELO
Hmmm, two more..
ivylander says
As ghastly as the Moody Blues eventually became, they deserve a pass simply for having recorded the sublime "Go Now." And besides, they might have been deluded, but they genuinely tried to achieve greatness. Failed miserably, but tried. That puts them ahead of any Eighties hair metal band you care to name: Ratt, Poison, Skid Row, Quiet Riot....
dermahrk says
Ivylander brings up a great point. The only Moody Blues vinyl I own is a 45 of ??Go Now??. There may be more gems on that first LP, when Denny Laine was part of the group and they were more Brit invasion than pretentious.
Of course, I will fight to the death to keep ELO off the list.
Lester Jonze says
Um, actually I kind of like ELO, but they do suck. Jeff Jynne's redeeming later work with the Wilburys, and a not too bad solo album from the same time period not withstanding.
goodmusiconly says
ELO? C'mon now, they do not suck! And call me a dork but I still like 'Nights in White Satin.' Cinderella, 80's-era Starship ... now we're talkin'.
Lester Jonze says
What? Oh hell no, OK, give me three redeeming qualities that Starship brought to the musical table. Poison, word. Poison could possibly knock Starship off the list, we'll just have to wait and see.
Lyrikhan says
haha...i jest
though let me say this...i find starship so hilarious its hard not to like it in that cheesy way
and if you are taking ELO off for what redeeming qualities they have.....we all know starship came from some good roots
Lyrikhan says
here's three redeeming qualities of 80s era starship:
1. featured on "Mannequin" Soundtrack
2. built a city on rock n roll
3. Mickey Thomas did kinda have a mean singing voice (Elvin Bishop anyone?)

Will ahahhahahaha
I should mention that my criterion for voting on this is: bands that are unbearable to me.
My vote has no traces of objectivity. Not a one ;)
Ronnie James will kick your ass Anna! You don't wish something like that on yourself.
Boston and Toto. The sound is totally unbearable to me.
Funny I never thought that 'Days of Future Past' was dreck. I rather like that record. Overproduced and all. From begining to end it has a cadence albums of today don't have. I also agree with Ivy. 'Go Now' is a fantastic debut album. Brit blues all the way through.
Personally I don't understand the criteria for placing these bands in the dust bin. It's all subjective.
So many shitty bands. So little interest in remembering them. I will say that Styx sux, Poison is, and Toto is a no-no. But, if the Moodys blew, it was only when they were at their most pretentious; at other times, they could be quite lovely.
