New Moon

Back in May I bought the "New" Elliott Smith album New Moon, which contains 24 never released on album tracks from his Kill Rock Stars days and it is amazing. This B-Side / Demo album is better than the finished products that big name artists are putting out now a days. The song-writing and guitar playing are Elliott at his best with that voice that is strictly Elliott. And though most of these songs have been out on the internet for quite awhile there is nothing like having the real thing.

This has nothing to do with music.

On Thursday July 5, 2007 my good friend and former baseball teammate Cpl. Jeremy Allbaugh was killed in the al Anbar province of Iraq, he was 21 years old. It’s strange, I’ve been friends with him since the seventh grade and that was the first time I ever referred to him as Jeremy, I always called him “Allball”, and he always responded to it. I feel sorry for the people that didn’t know him, because they missed out on getting to know a once and a lifetime guy. Here is a link to the Tulsa World article about Allball, please take the time to read it to understand the sacrifice he gave for all of us. http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=070710_1_A1_World63278

Guy Forsyth

Last week I enjoyed the music of Austin based blues artist Guy Forsyth at The Blue Door in Oklahoma City. He took the stage at 9 pm and played until 12:45 am making it one of the longest and best sets I’ve ever seen. He played a slew of instruments and one carpentry tool (the saw) with great precision. After the show he took time to talk with the twenty people that made up the crowd. He played the Bricktown Blues Festival the week before but he only had an hour set and it wasn’t in the personal setting that the Blue Door provides. If anyone gets a chance to see Guy Forsyth take it!

The Greatness of Steve Poltz

Story Time.
These are pictures of Steve Poltz and Jewel.
Steve and Jewel were sitting on the beach in Mexico when these Federales came up to them and asked if they wanted to help in a drug bust. After they caught the dealers they took these pictures and one officer gave Steve some of the pot. Not feeling very comfortable he said "no thanks." but the officer took out a knife and made him take it. When Steve and Jewel got back to the campground they where staying at he gave the pot to an old woman that worked there as a cook. Not knowing it was drugs she put it in the spaghetti and served it to the entire campground. The next morning Steve woke up and wrote You Were Meant For Me.

The Flaming Lips

The other day I read an article about The Flaming Lips and their Parking Garage Experiments of the mid 90's. The experiment consisted of forty cars in a parking garage in downtown OKC (and once more in Austin) with their stereos turned up and all playing different things to make a unique sound. Wayne Coyne got the idea after a KISS concert when everyone was playing different KISS songs in the parking lot. The experiments would later led to the recording of ZAIREEKA, the only album I've ever seen with instructions. Is it just me or are TFL the most underrated artists of all time? What are your thoughts?

Yorn & Fastball

So since my last blog I have been to two more great concerts. The first being Pete Yorn in Tulsa at Cains Ballroom (seriously, if you haven't seen this venue you should make a point to.) Pete put on a great show and so did the opener Minibar. The second was my favorite band of all time Fastball this past Saturday night in Fort Worth, TX. They played an even amount of songs from every album and even their new song The Modern World. They came with a guy named Collin Herring who has some nice tunes. Well worth the trip.

The dregs of the music industry

While strolling around my local Target the other day something caught my attention, it was the Christmas music stand. So I saunter on over to give it a look, they had James Taylor’s Christmas album, the new Sarah Mclachlan, a compilation of great holiday songs, and there it was an Ali Lohan (little sister of Lindsay)album. After seeing this I was on the edge of a meltdown. Over the past few years I have noticed a little trend that has made me sick, the handing over of major label record deals to no talent actresses and actors and worse no talent siblings of actresses and actors. These actress / singer / model / fashion designer or Slashes as I call them are the dregs of the music industry. Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Hillary Duff, Haylie Duff, Jesse McCartney, and now Ali Lohan are taking the place of a well deserving artist that only want to make music. When asked about their decision to dive into the music business they all seem to give the same answer “Its just something I have always wanted to do, its a dream come true.” But in fact its just another pay check. Hillary, Jesse, and Lindsay please just go back to acting. As for Ali, Haylie, Paris, and Ashlee, just go back to sponging off your family. The less we see and hear from you the better. To sum up my feelings on this subject I would like to quote the crowd of the 2005 Orange Bowl after Ashlee Simpson preformed, “BOOOOOOOOOO!”.

Concerts in the near future

The 2 week concert bonanza is coming up soon
Oct 31st Ben Folds in Fort Worth
Nov 2nd Steve Poltz and Billy Harvey in OKC
Nov 4th Ben Folds in Tulsa
Nov 11th Pete Yorn in Tulsa

And school on top of that. Should be fun.

My friends say I’m too negative and that I should look at the glass as half full, but that’s a bullshit term. If you went to a convenient store and bought a delicious Fresca, opened it and realized that half of it was gone you wouldn’t say “Wow, I got half of my Fresca.” You would say “Where the fuck is the rest of my delicious Fresca?”
