Tom Waits on Tour

Posted almost 6 years ago
Ahhhh Shhhiiizzzztttiiittt!!!Tom Waits is going on tour!!I'm getting tickets where ever I can and buying a plane ticket!!!!A very funny & true story: I was dating a girl when I first moved to SF 8 years ago. Her aunt met Tom Waits when she was working on Bram Stoker's Dracula (Tom Played R.M. Renfield). Her aunt moved to Sebastopol a few years later a few doors down from Tom & his family. So my girlfriend invites me to her aunt's birthday BBQ. We show up and mingle. I'm standing in line for food and start talking to this crazy looking guy. We exchange a few words and I ask him who he knows at the party. "Oh, I'm friends with the birthday girl." He says. I reply: "Cool. I'm dating her niece. I'm Joe. What's your name?" "Uh, Tom...""Nice to meet you. What's your story? What do you do?"He looks at me for a second and says, "Well, I play music.""Cool, me, too. What do you play? Do ya got a band?"At this point he realizes I've never heard of him. So we end up talking through out the day. In the car on the way back home, my girlfriend asks me if I knew who I was talking to. "Yeah, Tom Waits. Nice Guy. Kinda out there."She quickly schooled me just who Tom Waits was. He became one of my biggest influences. True Story.

  3. Ledbetter says It's a slight bummer that he ain't playing his home turf. But I love his explaination in his press release for the cities he is playing: "We need to go to Tennessee to pick up some fireworks, and someone owes me money in Kentucky," Brilliant. And, yes, I did run into him again at another BBQ in Sebastopol. I showed him a tad more exaggerated idolization that time around.

  5. River Lethe says That's an excellent Tom Waits story! Thanks for the heads up on the tour too--I'll be checking for the closest town! If you don't have the VH1 Storytellers, you should definitely try to hunt for it. I'm trying to upload it on my MOG, but so far, it's still not getting anywhere near all my tunes on the page.

  6. Ledbetter says Yuppers. I got the VH1 Storytellers & a 1985 David Letterman appearance. Both are great.

  7. CineFreak7 says I just bought tickets this morning to Tom's Asheville, NC, show. I think this might possibly turn out to be the greatest concert experience of my life (thus far). And what's this about a Tom Waits VH1 Storytellers? Where do I find this!?
