The Blueprint 3 Tour: Houston

Posted over 2 years ago

Went to see Jay Z perform at the Toyota Center in downtown Houston last night.

Aside from my firm belief that the place would come crashing down due to a Toyota support beam recall, not too much went wrong. I had Floor seats just ten rows back, surrounded by scantily clad women, lounging in the smell of marijuana smoke coming from somewhere in the crowd... Yeah, it was going to be a good night.

Then Trey Songz came on stage and literally ripped his undershirt off, in an act that leads me to believe that it was trying to eat him. He went on to almost maim himself with a mic stand. All within about 35 minutes. Im pretty sure that if he had stayed at least another 20 minutes, he would have left houstonians with at least one hillarious stage fall. Maybe next time.

About an hour passed between sets, which served two purposes above all others:

1: It built tension up the tension to see an actuall performance, instead of a soft core porn act.

2: It allowed everyone in the crowd time to get really, really hammered.

As with all social events with liquor though, soooner or later someone is bound to get hit with a chair or stomped in the face... both of which happened.

Eventually Hov hit the stage, and needless to say the crowd went apeshit. He went through the bulk of Blueprint 3, backed the entire time by uproarious participation from the crowd. The Roc band was in full effect, segueing with Jay as he did his thing.

I was rapping along with the dude through "on to the next one" when all of a sudden he silenced the band and kept spitting. Then he got bored with that verse and started freestyling. Then he slammed us into "Aint No Nigga" off of Reasonable Doubt.

My mind was effectively blown.

It's a host of little things like that, along with the big ones like having extended sets with Young Jeezy and a guest appearance by Bun B on "Big Pimpin", that kept the entirety of the Toyota Center on their feet and moving for a little over two hours.

If you've ever been a fan of Jay Z, I'd highly recommend catching a show on this tour. I've been a skeptic on Jay's ability ever since he dropped Kingdom Come, but if last nights show has proven anything to me, it's that Jigga's Back.
