For anyone who has heard of them, Mogwai has always been a little different. You were either a fan, or found the soft/reflective/melodic distortion-guitars not engaging enough. For those of you who havent heard of them, the band is a guitar heavy post-rock group with minimal lyrics. What makes them stand out is that every song seems deliberate and planned out. The melody has a progression that keeps the listener immediately focused on the moment.Whats most surprising about them is that they are even better live than in any recording - if you get a chance catch them in concert, although I dont think they'll be in North America again for a while.Their 2006 album "Mr. Beast" is possibly their best overall release. While earlier albums had fantastic songs, none were as concentrated as "Mr. Beast". In reviews, the new album is said to expand on their first full release "Young Team" - personally, I think the new album takes the original idea of serious guitars without any excess to clutter the music, and builds on it using the best characteristics of their other albums from the better part of the past decade. The CD is also their most accessible - which is partly why I'm bothering to write about it, people who have never listened to them can pick up the CD and end up impressed with the music - The disc is captivating, and can't be accused of being boring. My favourite bands usually play less abstract music - Mogwai is damn good, even though they havent broken into my top 10 yet - but this past weekend I was finishing my advanced SCUBA certification, and inbetween dives I found myself sitting on the edge of the dock listening to "Mr. Beast". The scorching sun, cool water, and exhaustion mixed together with both the slow burning and intense songs on the CD to leave me with a zen-like grin on my face.Try listening to the track "Folk Death 95" to get the overall feel of the disc.
