specifically, the album For Goodness Sakes Look At Those Cakes.

If any of my fellow MOGgers can hook a brother up, or at least find me a site that has it available, I'll love you forever. Or at least try to send you some of the wife's cookies.

Have a great Canadian Thanksgiving, y'all.

Oh, folks. This is a classic.

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello (Not Harvey Korman and Buddy Hackett, like in that TV movie) doing Who's on First.

Not that there's anything wrong with Harvey Korman.

I don't have much to say about this particular track, other than it was one of the first things I heard from FotC, I might have posted it in the past, and it's pretty goddamned funny.

It ain't standup, but it's comedy, and it's damned fine comedy.

I must admit, I do miss the days when the Simpsons would break into spontaneous song (unfortunately though, according to Homer, singing is the lowest form of communication). From Lyle Lanley's monorail to tearing down the burlesque house, some of the finest show tunes on television have come from these folks.

And this is the song that clinched my desire to learn all the lyrics to the songs featured on the show. Alf Clausen and James L. "Call me Mister Brooks" Brooks, you are goddamned genii.

From his growth in the entertainment field, which began as little-known standup, to better-known standup, to third banana on King of Queens, to voice of main rat in Ratatouille, Patton Oswalt is now, probably, a very funny comedian working today.

In another bit taken from the Comedy Death Ray set, he explains to us in great detail just how awful the KFC Famous Bowl is, then tells us the joys of working in Hollywood.

Good stuff. He's also got a routine about midgets that I'll end up posting here at some point.

Something to take the edge off

Never mind what he did to the Man Show, or the whole Girls Gone Wild "show me where babies feed" thing. Stanhope is one of the funniest, angriest comedians working today.

From defending Ricky Williams' marijuana use, to detailing the reason that he and his then-girlfriend had an abortion ("I wanted to see what it would feel like to kill another human being"), the man's not for everyone.

Whenever he feels like he's losing the crowd, or he's gone too far to the edge, he resorts to this simple non-sequitur to lighten the mood, and bring everyone back to his side.

Don't worry, I have a sweeter post coming up.

America's Funnyman

Here's the thing about Neil Hamburger- either you get it, or you don't. No jokes, per se, but bits made up of either the incredibly obvious or the incredibly stupid.

I first saw him opening up for Tenacious D, and he had an entire theatre completely divided- half loved him, half (the fratboy half) hated him. And that seems to be part of his schtick.

Awkward delivery, a grating stage persona, and jokes that you're not sure are funny or not.

That's America's Funnyman.

I didn't sign off on that!

I have no idea what this track is titled, since the Comedy Death Ray albums only seem to list comedians, not routines. Which is fine, really.

The problem with most comedians is, the cliches. The "Hey, folks, what do you think about..." or the "So this guy is all, you know?" comedians. There's nothing wrong with them, unless you like comedy.

What Daly did here, is use all of the cliches, and killed.

I'll be pulling a lot from the Comedy Death Ray album in the next little bit, since there are a ton of great comedians on it.

For my next trick, I'm gonna stop posting music

Instead, I think I'm gonna just try posting standup, alt-comedy, and troupe comedy. I have no idea if any other MOGgers are doing this, nor do I particularly care if they are, I just think it's something that could help to fill a void.

Every asshole and his dog on MOG, it would seem, is trying to one-up each other in new, hep indie bands, and an equal number are rushing to be the first to get the new Britney tunes up and running. That's all well and good, but why try to compete or keep up?

I mean, my status is BLAZINGOMG as it is, so I'm apparently in no danger of losing any prized readerlistenership, but even if I am, hell, I haven't posted anything since June anyway, so I'd be surprised if half of you even remembered if I were alive or not. Nonetheless, I'm gonna try to entertain and enlighten through laughter.

Oh, and btw, my son was born on June 25 (another good reason for me not being around for two months). Lucas Josef came into the world at 1.38 pm, weighing in at 9 lbs, 14 ounces. Mom and baby are doing fine, mom's vagina is still a bit pissed off about the whole affair.

Blind Melon gets all educational and shit, and I provide you with a quick math lesson

As you know, Three is a magic number. Yes it is. It's a magic number.

Taken from the "School House Rock Rocks" album, this song holds a special place in my heart (although the best song on the album was, by far, Ween's cover of "The Shot Heard 'Round The World"), since I'm a numbers geek.

Not quantum sciences or statistical math or calculus or any of that braniac stuff, but I still remember in Grade 5, being taught the basic rules of how you can tell a if a number is divisible simply by looking at it.

Want to know if a number is divisible by 2? Just look to see if it's odd or even. DIvisible by 3? Well, add up all of the numbers in that number, i.e. 763- 7+6+3=16. Can you divide that by 3? No? Then you're SOL. 978? Good to go.

You can divide any number by 4 provided the last two numbers in the string are factors of 4. 5- if the number ends in a 5 or a 0. 6? Divisible by 2 AND 3.

8? Last three numbers in the string are factors of 8 (that is, 338 isn't, but 907,432 is). Nine is the same as 3, but the numbers in the string need to add up to 9.

There's no rule for 7, you need to do the actual math for that one. But play around, and you'll see that the rest of the rules hold true.

Metal.

I mean, it's no Adult Friend Finder, but MOG is certainly turning into quite the singles scene for attached, expecting, rapidly-approaching-middle-aged men like myself.

Sundays are to covers tunes as Faith No More are to the Bee Gees. True or False?

Back in the day, Faith No More had a hit song called "Epic." On the strength of this one song, they claimed opening-slot gigs on tours with Billy Idol and Metallica, and somewhere during their set, they would play silly little things like the Nestles Chocolate jingle, and "Easy" by the Commodores.

Thing is, when they played "Easy," they would play it close to the original; no crunchy guitars, no calliope music, no "making it their own," as so many bands like to do when covering someone else's song. A reporter once asked why they played the song almost note for note to the original, and MIke Patton replied, "It's more evil to play it straight." No one could ever tell if he was being ironic or not.

I don't know how evil it was, but I actually get thrown off now when I hear the opening piano to "Easy," and Lionel Richie starts to sing instead of Patton. Call me crazy. I also see transvestites in my head when the song comes on the iPod or whatever, but that's something my wife and I have to sort out on our own.

Either way, this isn't "Easy," this is a Bee Gees cover. Carrying in the grand old tradition of playing it straight, Patton even doing a serviceable Barry Gibb impression. Enjoy this, people.

Also, because I like you, here's a bonus video of them doing Herb Alpert's "This Guy's In Love With You." TWO cover songs, ONE post! THAT'S VALUE!
The song that made my pregnant woman leave the room

Z-Rock Hawaii, "I Get a Little Taste of You"

Sometimes it's not enough
to take a midday stroll
or play some rock-n-roll
or smoke another bowl. But the
only thing I do when I
find I'm feeling blue is
get a little taste of you.

Sometimes I feel so good,
sometimes I feel so bad.
Often I get mad,
even when I'm glad.
I haven't got a clue,
but I know just what to do.
Get a little taste of you!

I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste,
suck a little face,
taste a little waste with you.

I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste,
suck a little face,
smear a little paste on you.

I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste,
suck a little face,
taste a little waste with you.

Watchin' Grunge leg drop New Jack through a press table

To commemorate the news (I know, and I apologize, I'm Canadian) that a new Weezer album is due to hit on June 17, I bring to you the single greatest song that they have ever recorded.

How stupid is it? For all I know,
You won't be true
Or maybe you just don't know what to do
Or maybe you're scared to say
"I'm falling for you."

And for the record, Maladroit is possibly the most underrated album of this decade.

She really likes me!

Faith4Sweetgirl just sent me a letter through MOG! She must have read my post about the Spam mail, and decided that I was just the guy for her!

She writes:
Hello My Dear
How are you doing today, i hope you are doing fine. I hope and i know that this email that i am sending to you would be reaching you in good health? I want to tell you something very important, though i am not suppose to tell you now because we just met but i know that you would be of good help to me, but i think i need to tell you this, because i think you may be a nice person when i saw your profile, i felt you are a nice and caring person. And i think i can trust you in this too, this is why i am telling you this. All i want you to do is to keep this as a top secret between us. and also promise me that no other person will hear this ok. Right now am really going through hard and terrible life with my mother.
Actually it happened when i lost my dad, my dad is dead and i am left with my mum. so after the death of my father, his family member came to the house and collected everything my dad left behind for us. and they ask me and my mum to leave the compound and they sold the house. We could not able to find them again because of the war that happened in my country Liberia, so just last week my mum show to me some documents which my dad use to deposit $19Million US dollars in a bank here in Ghana and also a picture of my dad at the time of sign the agreement letter with the bank and he use my name as the next of kin to the funds. So when my mum show to me the documents, i was so happy so i travel to Ghana with my mum. When we get to the bank and we presented all the legal documents that was given to my father at the time of depositing the fund with the bank, we were told that the money is still with the bank, but they cannot transfer the money to us here in Africa, because my dad went into an agreement with them at the time of depositing the fund that the fund should be transferred on express transfer to leave Africa. I never knew my dad was planning of opening a company abroad. so on our way out of the bank, one of the staff of the bank advice us to look for a trust worthy foreign partner to help us receive the funds from the bank. So i want you to help us contact the bank, so that the bank can transfer the money of my late father to you, so that i and my mum can come over to your country and meet you so we all can start a better and happy life again.
Please, i want you to understand that I trust you and I know you can help me and my family because we are passing through hard moments here in Ghana, I am a beautiful girl and so when people see me they don't know the condition that i am undergoing due the reason that I don't want people to know the stress and pains we are passing here in Ghana, and then we meet and live life to the fullest, and i feel we can be together if it is meant to be, that is why am telling you this top secret because am sacred and this is all we have left in this world. i believe you can understand my present situation. I trust you that is why I am telling you this. as am writing you this mail, my eyes is full of tears because my mum is seriously sick and we don't know any body here in Ghana. so we are living with an old lady called Mrs. Vida Anayor, she is working as a security officer close to us, but she is very old and she will stop work very soon, so try your best and help me and my mum. We really need your help. Life is so hard and terrible for me and my mum right now in Ghana because we don't have any helper. i think I've truly been blessed by finding you and I 'll never let you go away from my life. I will want you to understand that we are going to sign an agreement before the bank will transfer the fund of my late father to you because we have not met before now and the Agreement is for the security reason of the funds too. so i will like you to provide this information so that i and my mum can get the Agreement done from a lawyer here in Ghana, and send you a copy of it to sign. So please reply me with your, Full name, Age, Occupation and address. My mum promise to give to you 20% percent if you can help us get the money from the bank.
i will be sending you a picture of my mum, my late father at the time of depositing the fund with the bank here in Ghana and a picture of my late father casket during burial ceremony, and i am also sending to you a picture of myself. When i receive a reply from you. Please try and get back to me as soon as possible to my email address faith4sweetgirl2007@hotmail.com so that i can send to you the legal documents that was given to my father at the time of depositing the fund with the
bank.
Please take care of your self,
i hope to hear from you soon. God bless you.
Yours Obediently,
From faith and mother

Please express your thoughts and feelings on what I should do next in the format of a Zork command (i.e. "Go to the bank, and open an account. Place the bank book on the mailbox", that kind of thing).

Good Lawsy, do I loves me some mashups

Are they passe yet? Have they jumped the shark yet? Well, I don't give a hell. When you get to be my age, you care less and less about what's "cool", if the kids are still saying that, and you just worry about what's right for you. Whether it's loose shoes, tight pussy, or a warm place to shit, you gotta do what's comfortable. Remember that, you whippersnappers.

White Stripes and N.E.R.D. First brought to my attention by fellow MOGger and kindred spirit, Fiasco.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to announce my nerdcrush on indiepixie. Don't worry, I'm not much of a stalker, although now that I say this, I'm thinking I should really go back and edit that line about what's comfortable.

Ahh, fuck it. Too late now.

MOG hits the big time.

No, I don't mean in web hits, the cover of Wired, or a shout-out from Chris Pirillo.

In the past week or so, I've gotten two spam mails via the MOGMail here on the site.

The first one was from a lovely Russian girl who apparently became so smitten with me via my MOG page (I guess she likes Tad), that she wants me to email her right away and make her my wife. I would, but my current common-law spouse would likely have a fit, considering she's pregnant and rather emotional about things like this at the moment.

The latest one is from the Nigerian representative for Mobil Exxon, and if I give my banking information right away, I can get in on the ground floor of an exciting new opportunity. Again, if not for the wife...

Part of me is a little appalled that MOG would let this kind of thing happen, but then again, part of me is a bit proud that this is a big enough community that this kind of thing CAN happen. We're not as big/bad as Myspace or Facebook, of course, but at the same time, I'm not getting notifications from MOGMail yet that there are 4!!! members interested in me.

Thoughts?

The crowd went crazy when Tommy hit the stage.

A song I've always enjoyed, by a band that refuses to die, or at least stop reuniting.

I bought the Tommy album secondhand for somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 at a yard sale in Winnipeg. I really only bought it for 'Pinball Wizard', but I figured, for $2, hey, why not. overall, honestly, it's a decent album (this may be understating things for some people, but I was never a huge Who fan anyway).

There are some parts that are silly, yes, and some that are rather indulgent. But for a lot of people, that was a lot of the appeal to the Who, and who am I to argue. I also have to remember to take into account the fact that this was a rock "opera," and with concept albums (operas or not), this is pretty much the norm.

Anyway, this is a song that I don't think really ever gets any love. It's not earth-shattering, and it's not something that'll convert someone into being a Who fan and go buy their entire catalog (even Face Dances?). But it's a delightful little romp nonetheless.

Enjoy, my sexies, enjoy.

Desperately Seeking Santa

My dear fellow MOGgers, I implore you. I need your assistance in locating a copy, digital or physical, of one of the finest Sub-Pop albums ever.

It's TAD's 8-Way Santa disc, and though I have fond, fond memories of it, I no longer have a copy, and the one person I thought might be able to hook a brother up came up literally empty.

So if anyone out there has a version they'd be willing to lend/sell/other to me, I will personally have my daughter plant a tree in your honor.

Thank you for your time, my beloveds.

...and as in life, my search ended right where it began

Ever hear a tune on the TV, maybe in a commercial, and think "ZOMGZ, I need that song!" Happened to me a little while ago.

I'm sitting there watching The Office, when this commercial comes on

"Zoinks!" I say to myself. "That's a catchy tune." And so, armed with little knowledge, I set out to find it.

It's a vaguely familiar song, which I suppose is what ad campaigns set out to do, but I just can't place it. It sounds old, but probably isn't. If this is one of those new-fangled indie bands, I'll hurt, but I need this song.

After a couple of weeks of trying to figure it out, I give up. It's hopeless.

Then, one day, while puttering around the house with iTunes on shuffle, it comes up in my playlist.

Fuck. Me. I had it all along.

The Flaming Lips. The W.A.N.D.

Stop me if you've heard this one before

No, seriously. It's the time of the season, and I'm willing to forgive MOG its previous buggerups, and keep hanging around to share and see what others have for us.

Anyway, this one's a classic, and I'm sure you already have it kicking around in your collections...but it's a classic for a reason, dammit.

I'll have more Festivus-y stuff later, after I get in from doing the grocery shop; I'm done with gifts for the year, I've spoiled the wife and child, and since this is our first non-Winnipeg Christmas, it's time to make things as special as possible, considering I'll be drunk for much of the next 5 days.

Go get yourself a hot toddy, cuddle up by the fire, and mellow out, childrens.

Another glorious track from Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, a little tune called "Before I Let You Go."

Before I let you go
I just want you to know
Skunks will lose their smell
People ice skatin' in hell
... etc

You know as well as I do that I'm not going to give any huge amounts of background on this, so just hit play and get yourself funked.

edit

Yup. MOG and Rhapsody are definitely teaming up to fuck over the Canadians. I think I need to find a new site to get my fix...

Yeah, this isn't really a Christmas post at all, but a wonderful gift to all my fellow bassists out there.

Spinal Tap, and every bassist known to man. Unfortunately, I couldn't be there.

I would now like to thank the MOG community for finally realizing that, really and truly, I'm not all that great.

A week or so ago, my woman surprised me with the news that at the ripe old age of 37 (38 when the actual event takes place), after raising 4 kids that didn't really belong to me, I am going to be a dad.

Biological dad. Not weekday dad, or court-ordered dad, but a dad.

Obviously, this is a big deal to me, because armed with this knowledge, I will no longer have any kind of a life of my own. Still, I'm pretty stoked.

I am now accepting gifts of TMBG cd's, and any other groovy items you may have lying around.

And the song I'm attaching has nothing to do with fatherhood, I just wanted to post a song, and mashups make my pants tingle.

When you google the lyrics for this song, it tells you it was done by the Jackson 5. I'm not sure who they are either, but I think they're like the Jena 6, except in Mississip'.

a post by a guy named Waydutch done reminded me of the greatness that was fIREHOSE, and of course, Mike "Watt" Watt.

Jazz Saturday: Oscar Peterson, Coleman Hawkins, and Nat

Found this on Youtube by fluke; I wanted to get a good track, and for some reason, Oscar Peterson came to mind (maybe it's a Canadian thing, who knows).

I loaded it up, and started playing it, and wow, very nice. 5 jazzmen, all at the top of their games, just making a nice little jazz tune for TV broadcast.

Listen to Oscar's solo, too; he busts out Ravel's 'Canon in D Minor,' which is also the basis for Blues Traveler's "Hook."

The day after Funky Friday:

Shut up, I know it's Saturday, but quite frankly, by Friday, I'm tired, and the last thing I want to do is sift through things to share with you. Yeah, well, I've had a rough week, you're not the only one.

I go to Starbucks. A lot. I don't drink the frou-frou coffees, the designer caffeine, the $5 lattes, I just go for the vente bold, black. Once in a while, I'll grab a pumpkin scone or the chocolate cinnamon loaf, but for the most part, it's black coffee all the way.

The last few weeks, the 'Out of Sight' compilation that they've got in the 'Hear!' Music section has been calling my name...

...SO I got it, and even though I have some of the tracks on this already, it hasn't left my car CD player. Not only am I discovering some great tracks, but I'm also recognizing some samples that I really have no business recognizing (i.e. Rufus' guitar line from "You Got The Love" that was used in the Apollo Smile song from the "Days of Thunder" soundtrack...but there are a lot of samples in that song).

I knew Maceo from way back, but this song is just great. Enjoy.

Adequately prepared to rock.

So I've been mulling about the idea of putting a new band together as of late, completely new and with a bit of a high concept.

Me, fronting a band of three attractive girls who can play.

I'm throwing away the concept of boy band with hot girl fronting, because there have been a ton of them, we don't need any more (apologies to Metric fans everywhere, of course). But a band where some aging, fat schlub with a mediocre voice and beyond average guitar skills is fronting a band full of hot chicks who can rock? Well, dammit, it's an idea past due.

Consider this, then, an open call. If you're in the Vancouver area, are a girl, are hot, over 19, and can play an instrument, email me at lamicus@gmail.com and we'll talk. There will be no hanky-panky, as I am attached and will be struck down in cold blood if anything were to happen, this is strictly a professional opportunity.

Also, I have no practice space.

I hate Winnipeg.

Late afternoon, another day is nearly done
A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
That hollow hurried sound, feet on polished floor
And in the dollar store, the clerk is closing up
And counting loonies trying not to say

I hate Winnipeg

The driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
The crowded riders' restlessness enunciates
The Guess Who sucked, the Jets were lousy anyway
The same route everyday
And in the turning lane
Someone’s stalled again
He’s talking to himself
And hears the price of gas repeat his phrase

I hate Winnipeg

And up above us all
Leaning into sky
Our golden business boy
Will watch the North End die
And sing, “I love this town”
Then let his arcing wrecking ball proclaim

I
Hate
Winnipeg

Since Pandora quit broadcasting to Canada, I've been hurting for internet radio at work. I still don't own an iPod, so I need to rely on discs and the Geek Squad for listening fun, and it rather sucks.

So, I found Iceberg Radio, found a suitable station for my listening enjoyment, and this was the first song that it played for me.

Tony A, from Hi-C, was the rapping voice of Chris Rock in the post-modern classic CB4. I was going to post 'Straight Outta Locash," but decided not to, and went with this instead.

But I might post it later anyway.

It's a lazy September Saturday, and in between taking the kid fo the doctor, and going to the dairy, I've been futzing around on GarageBand for the first time since I bought the Mac in the first place.

Now, I don't have the new, shiny Mac Mini; I got the one that came out a week or so before Apple announced the Intel stuff, and actually included an input for microphones, instruments, etc.

So, I sat here all afternoon, letting the milk sit on the counter, playing in GB, just to make something I was reasonably proud of.

I'm not there yet, but this is what I got. This was done using nothing but the stock samples in GarageBand, at a glorious 120 BPM.

Enjoy. Or not, as the case may be.

Tales of the Geek Squad, pt 1

So, I recently discovered from a member of tech support (a/k/a Geek Squad) that here at the office, a branch of the provincial government, there is an entire server dedicated to music, movies, games, fileZ, etc, for employees to enjoy and use, but only if they’re “in good” with Geek Squad.

So, I got access to the server a week or two ago, and recently loaded every piece of music into WiMP so that I could listen to music while keying, batching, whatever needed to be done without my attention being needed elsewhere. I discovered two things doing this.

1. Geek Squad doesn’t care for proper ID3 tags (I had no idea Bad Company performed Wild Horses AND Bohemian Rhapsody!)
2. Geek Squad listens to a lot of shit.

Luckily, this tune popped up, and almost (ALMOST) redeemed Geek Squad. Almost.

Great song, nonetheless. I might have to stop on the way home to buy a CD.

...but I honestly just haven't found anything I like to listen to as of late.

I haven't discovered anything truly "new" that I feel a kinship, a connection with. I'm turning into one of those "ahh, you kids today!" people, where only my music is the good music. Luckily, I have yet to solder my car radio onto the Classic Rock© station, rendering the tuner useless.

I do, however, continue to get a kick out of dumb, useless shit like this.

I think I'm in like with this girl

Yeah, the chick from Metric. It's funny, I've been hearing this song on the radio for over 3 years now (more now that I moved to the coast), and I never knew who did this song until last night, when I Googled the shit out of it.

I have no idea why I like this tune so much, unless it's just the basic 60's girl group vibe it's putting out, or just her voice. Who the hell knows.

All I know is, the search is on for a copy for leeTunes.

It's been a while.

It's not that I didn't want to mog with you, I was just....busy. That's it, busy. It's not you, it's me.

I see my good buddy Fiasco finally found a Cannonball Adderly disc he's been looking for, probably for at least as long as I've known him...you'd better come looking to me for suggestions when you get to your February mix, fucker.

I also see that They Might Be Giants are coming to Vancouver in September. Again, living in Winnipeg, there were a lot of bands I never got to see, either because I was hampered by a wife and kids, or didn't want to drive to Minneapolis or Chicago (or Fargo, for that matter, but if you've ever been to Fargo, you know where I'm coming from) to see...Ween, for example.

But TMBG never came anywhere near Winnipeg. But they'll be here next month. September 25, at the Commodore Ballroom. I'm going, mrs Lamicus is going, and I'm trying to get some friends from around the continent to come to town to see them too.

Just because.

This is where I'd normally put a TMBG tune from the library, but I don't seem to have any, which is odd, since I know for a fact that I actually own Flood and John Henry...

So, here's something I found on Youtube instead.

I see your face in every drop of golden urine
Reflection rippling in the bowl
The room is spinnin'
I fall to me knees, oh God please,
I'm losing everything
Retasting nachos
exhaling beer
I love getting drunk.

Bumblefoot, Drunk

You can also catch Mr. Foot on tour with Guns n Roses, if Axl hasn't decided to put Chinese Democracy on hold again.

The Summer of Drugs

It's early on a Sunday morning, and it's been hotter than anything in Vancouver lately.

32 by the water, 37 inland (all temperatures are in Celsius; for you Merkins out there, take the number, multiply it by 9, divide by 5, and add 32; in algebraic terms, it's X x 9 / 5 + 32).

That means it's officially summer time on the wet coast, the time of year when it stops raining, and the ladies wear less and less, "god" bless them all.

However, because it's Vancouver, most of these ladies are, more than likely, on something. That's where this tune comes in.

Enjoy, sexies.

Oh, Lee, Where the f**k you been?

Excellent question.

Over the (Canadian) long weekend, we moved out of the wilds of Langley BC (the Greater Vancouver Area's trailer park) to Burnaby, home of Michael J Fox, Joe Sakic, Swangard Stadium, and giagantic-ass-f**king mall known as Metrotown.

Luckily, we are nowhere near the stadium or the mall.

In that time, having no TV or internet, obviously, I've been unable to bring barely-read posts and rarely-listened-to mp3s to you, my loyal legion of musical compadres. I hope you've missed me as much as I've missed not having the internet.

Joining me this evening, is a 32-ounce slurpee cup (X-Men Collectable cup, featuring Juggernaut and Mystique, actually) full of Mailbu and pineapple juice.

So, what have I missed? Not much, apparently. I found out the Cure are coming to town (tickets starting at $30!), that I haven't heard of 99% of the bands that are on the Warped tour that Mrs Lamicus wanted to go to, and that if I'm going to be taking the train to work instead of driving, I needs me some iPod.

And that's about it. To tide you over, here's a grandiose little Party Ben mashup. To me, Ben is about the best masher upper thingie guy out there, but then again, I'm not that versed in the culture. I really need to get out more, perhaps. But then again, I'm 37, and really have no business going to dance clubs or raves or....well, anyplace where a Canucks jersey isn't considered 'dressy.'

Enjoy.

Quite possibly my favorite FZ tune, from quite possibly an under-appreciated FZ album.

If you ever get to see the bootleg of the performance of ths song from the CBS television studios in LA (KMET? I don't have the liner notes in front of me), do it. This song becomes even more incredible after you realize it's essentially a live track.

I know I don't go into as much detail with some of these things as I could, or should, or anything else, but I don't like being one of those explainy people. Just listen to it, take what you will from it, and enjoy it, if at all possible.

MOG Meter: Does it mean anything?

That little bar on the right of your profile, MOG Meter. Does it really mean a whole lot of anything?

My first week or so here, I was "below the radar," which is fine, I don't expect much more than that. I'm just some rapidly-approaching middle-aged schlub from Vancouver via Winnipeg, who has a fair-to-middling music collection, sometimes questionable taste in songs, and a sense of humor that often falls short of its intended target.

So how the fuck did my status get to "Blazing?" Not many people listen to the mp3s I post, not many views on the youtube vids I link to, not many comments to speak of.

So what makes me so goddamned special? I've gained 5 or 6 strangers who seem to trust my odd tastes in music (and lost one, I'm so sorry, Flowerpower111, whatever I did, I can change), and some already-existing internet friends, but really....blazing?

Blazing? Obviously, MOG Brain is having a cramp.

Things worked out better than we had planned

Dear MOG

I never thought it would happen to me, but one day some years back, I heard a song that summed up my formative years so well, I just had to tell you about it.

Seriously, I've never been one of those people who made tapes or whatnot to express myself through music. Okay, I made a girl a mixtape once, but that was just to try to get her to listen to something besides mindless top 40, and in retrospect, I never should have put "Girls LGBNAF" by Ice T on it, but that's in the past.

But I was in the mall one Tuesday, which made sense because I knew damn well that the new music hits stores on Tuesdays, and I knew Faith No More was about due to drop the follow-up to The Real Thing.

There it was, Angel Dust, so I grabbed it immediately (on cassette, so I could listen to it in the El Camino on the way home, if it was any good, I'd pick it up on CD later and trade the cassette in). I put it in the deck, and as soon as this song started, I pulled over to check the lyric sheet.

It summed up so much in my life, and what I thought were my dad's expectations, that I had that "Whoa!" moment that you only see in Keanu Reeves movies.

Dad grew up poor, and always drilled the fiscal responsibility thing into our heads at a young age. While friends and family were moving to better neighborhoods and better schools, we stayed in the Winnipeg Ghetto, the north end, to build capital and equity. He scrimped and saved, yet blew his money on things that seemed to make no sense. I wonder where I got that from.

Naturally, I began to rebel, and threw all financial sense out the window. Of course I regret it now, and won't see any kind of real credit again until my mid 40's.

What's the point to my story? I like stories.

Put an axe in your hand, poke your eyes out

Lights Out, by the Angry Samoans.

For the longest time, I thought this song was a figment of my imagination, I heard it once or twice here and there, it stuck in my head, but never really gave it much thought.

I heard the title of it, and I thought "Lights Out? Yeah, man, Peter Wolf rocks!" That was then I was on a J Geils kick, and didn't understand that there was a much more talented Peter Wolf playing keys for Zappa, not just the skinny guy who sang 'Centerfold.'

Then one night, I was watching one of the reruns of an early ESPYs telecast, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones performed their hit, "The Impression That I Get." Immediately afterward, they launched into this song. I wasn't crazy.

Well, I am crazy, but this song is a glorious example of the economy of early punk. Don't set up a groove, don't set a mood, just play.

I'm not sure if they're really Samoan or not, though.

Any time you might see something on my "Just played" list that smacks of fake punk, or girl music, that's my girlfriend's music. I don't like Green Day, don't care for Evanescence (other than wanting to do unspeakable things to Amy Lee), American Hifi, etc etc etc. Don't blame me, that's not my music.

This is, though.

What's all this about dirty songs?

Well, if it's good enough for others to post, it's good enough for me too.

Hell, this might even qualify for Funky Friday, too, for all I know. It's still Friday in Vancouver, so I'm just going for it.

Please note: Playing this song around your significant other will likely result in you not getting any head for the next little while, unless she's a complete freak. I will not be held responsible for anything that happens as a result of you playing this, not even as a larf.

Defying the laws of tradition.

So anyway, my old guitarist sends me an email asking if I want to help out with his cousin's music site, Guitarhoo which is essentially a site for guitarists and whatnot. I say sure, then I find out what they want me to do.

Essentially, they want me to do some of the podcast hosting duties, and a couple of interviews here and there. I agree, not really knowing what I'm getting myself into.

Then I hear who I have to interview.

Les. Fucking. Claypool.

So now, I'm stoked, and scared shitless, and nervous, and completely unsure of what to do. I'm going through with the interview, which is scheduled for "later this month," but I'm drawing blanks for what to ask him. As I'm a complete virgin about things like this, I know I should play it all safe, but at the same time, the fanboy in me is saying that I should ask him things that he wouldn't normally be asked, to make it a truly cool interview.

I want to ask him about Buckethead, about fishing, about Keanu Reeves, all of that, but I'm also afraid of coming off like some total idiot, and him cutting the interview short.

I'm sure I'll be fine, when it's all said and done, but I'm still shit scared.

The only way I could be more nervous is if it were Bootsie Collins, or Mickey from Ween. Then I'd be acting like a total schoolgirl.

Like I'm not already.

Been a fan since Faith No More's The Real Thing came out, and I haven't felt the need to feel otherwise. Whether it's FNM, Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas, whatever. The man's incredible.

To counteract my unintentional amount of (for me, anyway) melancholy over Warren Zevon, I'm going to post a Beatallica song, because at my age, I still can't get enough of dumb shit like this.

Enjoy every sandwich.

Just doing a quick youtube search for Warren Zevon, no particular idea nor reason why, when I found a clip of WZ on Letterman, performing Roland.

What's remarkable here is that you can see that Zevon isn't particularly comfortable, and isn't in the best of health. In other words, his shit was fucked up. When he died, the world lost one of the greats.

Enjoy every sandwich, Warren.

Just when I thought it was safe to go back to youtube...

So when I was looking for Daisy Chainsaw vids to satisfy my long-standing crush on Katie Jane, I found out that she and the DC guitarist started another band a few years back, Queen Adreena.

Katie Jane hasn't lost any sexy, I know this much is true.

Back in the late 80s, early 90s, I bought myself a CD called 'Eleventeen,' by Daisy Chainsaw. This was when I had the disposable income to do such things, plus, the singer looked pretty hot. It became one of my favorite discs, mainly because I could annoy everyone within earshot by just pulling out the CD case.

Vince Furnier, party guy

So, a long, long time ago (like two or three years!), I was in an Alice Cooper tribute band in Winnipeg, Malice Cooper. I played bass, like all other fat malcontents in rock. DUring that time, I can honestly say that I discovered a new appreciation for the musical stylings of Ms. Cooper, nee Vincent Furnier.

We had our laughs, we played in Saskatoon, and then the guitarist and I quit to start our own band, Los Hombres Ejaculatos. We help exactly one rehearsal, then forgot about it all.

I haven't listened to a single Alice song since then, either, except for when "Raped and Freezin'" comes on iTunes.

Well, Americans, what, nothing better to do?
Why don't you throw yourselves out
You're an immigrant too
Who's folling who, what should we do?
Well you can't be a pimp
and a prostitute, too.

Relics of an awkward youth, part 1.

Although you can't tell from the profile picture, my childhood was pretty awkward. I was pasty, fat, socially inept, and the girls just didn't like me.

Well, I'm older now. And these are a couple of the songs that got where I am today, a type-II diabetic with a penchant for potentially-dangerous sexual acts and a predilection for Spider-Man body paint.

Truth be told, it never clicked in to my 9-year old brain that Freddie Mercury, the guy who wore the one-piece jumpsuits, called everyone "Darling," was carried around the stage by musclemen, and wiggled his ass at every opportunity, was gay. I can only wonder how he felt when Brian May introduced 'Fat Bottomed Girls' at rehearsal.

What If I Made A Mix, and Not Only Did Nobody Listen, But They Didn't Give A Shit Either- 05.05.07

The tracklisting for a mix CD that I made a day or two ago, to keep me company on the commute. Not to be confused with the 'Party Shuffle' mixes, which kept us rocking from Winnipeg to British Columbia.

Feel Good Hit Of The Summer- Queens of the Stone Age
Dio- Tenacious D
Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos- Public Enemy
Fallin'- De La Soul ft. Teenage Fanclub
Can't Con an Honest John- The Streets
Galvanize the Empire- Party Ben
Beacon Light- Ween
Lost In Hollywood- System Of A Down
Glory Box- Portishead
Cheer Up- Reel Big Fish
Eels - It's a Motherfucker
Domestic Violence- Bobby Digital (RZA)
The Rooster- Outkast
Paranoid Android- Radiohead
Drop It Like It's A Whole Lotta Love- Party Ben
99 Problems- Jay Z featuring The Beatles (DJ Dangermouse)
There's No Home for You Here- The White Stripes
Benny And The Jets- Beastie Boys
Be Aggressive- Faith No More

Feedback? Complaints? Kudos? Keep it to yourself, I have enough to do without listening to you people bitch about my love of mashups.

Cope. The first vid is the official (?) video for 'Transdermal Celebration,' from the vastly underrated quebec album. The second is a solidly-rocking cover of Zeppelin's 'All My Love,' and is taken from Ween's 'Live in Chicago' DVD.

Which is highly recommended by me, btw.

Enjoy.

On a Streets kick, pt. I

So lately, I've been on a Streets kick, and I have no idea why. Maybe it's spring, all the rain in the GVRD, or just the fact that I've been liking the shit out of them.

In honor of my latest obsession, here's the video for Fit And You Know It.

Muah!
