MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

(118)

This is just one of those long, uncomplicated grooves that you can lay back and do whatever you want to or need to do. It gets bonus points for starting out with that squealy little synth modualtion (which reminds me a bit too much of the Theme from the Rockford Files).

The Blackbyrds were an academically pedigreed group, as several of the members were extracted from the Howard University Music Dept. Donald Byrd put the original group together in 1974 with percussionist * Pericles "Perk" Jacobs, Jr., drummer Keith Killgo, keyboardist Kevin Toney, reeds player Allan Barnes, bassist Joe Hall, guitarist Barney Perry. Other key players included guitarist Orville Saunders and saxophonist/flautist Steve Johnson. (*from All Music Guide)

Get out there and do it in the park - or in the cubicle or the coffee shop or...

I'd so forgotten about this. Excellent! Shame about the flute.
Not exactly what I recall. Was there a more upbeat cover?

I was wondering that myself, Max. I'm not sure. I'll have to do a little research.

Thanks for the props, Popeye. Nuthin's as cute as your lil' icon. ;-P

Relatedly, in an oblique kind of way, remember "Push push in the bush"? By an outfit called Musique, I think. Haven't had much luck tracking it down, but will look a bit more.

I wish my liner notes were a little more comprehensive on this. It's from a great compilation called Super Breaks. I'll have to do a little more digging to find out who did the moanin' .

Max - I do remember Push Push in the Bush Bush. Unfortunately, I don't think I have a copy of it. Somebody out there must.

Keep Funk Alive!

Nice, L.M.I.! Of course, I'm familiar with "Walking in Rhythm," but this one is quite a nugget, too.
