MOG Economic Summit: Musical Advice for Tight Times

Posted about 1 year ago

No matter where you live on the planet, you are probably experiencing the slowly (ok, maybe quickly) sinking economy. Whether in the U.S. of A, the U of K, the E of U, Down Under or East of the Sun and West of the Moon - the economy sucks. If you are my age (Gen-X elder) or older, you can recall the Regan / Thatcher era of the early 1980s, and how woefully sucky those times were when it came to jobs and money. I, myself, graduated high school into the worst job market in decades. I know that we in the U.S of A are dancing in that same swamp, again. I don't want to go into details on how we got here (is it November yet?), but would rather look to our Musical Leaders to offer us sound advice on how to stretch that money and make ends meet. Musicians usually have or do live on a shoestring budgets, so we know they understand creative financing and creative budgeting.

With that said, I hereby convene this MOG Musical Economic Summit. To open the proceedings, may I present for your consideration, from the depths of 1983, the B-52s practical solution to a lack of cash.

Let's have all ideas on the (turn)table. We can dance, sing, hum, whistle and stomp our way through these tough times, people. All we have to do is turn up the speakers.

We're in the basement, learning to print
All of it's hot!
10-20-30 million ready to be spent
We're stackin' 'em against the wall
Those gangster presidents

Livin' simple and trying to get by
But honey, prices have shot through the sky
So I fixed up the basement with
What I was a-workin' with
Stocked it full of jelly jars
And heavy equipment
We're in the basement...
10-20-30 million dollars
Ready to be spent

Walk into the bank, try to pass that trash
Teller sees and says "Uh-huh-that's fresh as grass."
See the street pass under your feet
In time to buy the latest model get-away Jeep

    Excellent post!

Oasis - The Importance of Being Idle. Advice for taking it easy, going with the flow, etc. Love the song, and the video has an actor that's a big crush of mine starring....

I sold my soul for the second time
'Cause the man don't pay me
I begged my landlord for some more time
He said "Son, the bills are waiting"
My best friend called me the other night
He said "Man - are you crazy"
My girlfriend told me to get a life
She said "Boy - you're lazy"
    But I don't mind
As long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine
I'll be fine, if you give me a minute, a man's got a limit
I can't get a life if my heart's not in it
    Hey Hey

Interesting perspective, Minister from Greece. "I can't get a life if my heart's not in it." So true, so true. Maybe part of lesson of this bad economy is show us how obsessed we are with money and things, eh?

Exactly. Doesn't apply to everyone, of course, but to those of us {I'm guilty, too, from time to time} that stopped appreciating the simple everyday things. Things that we have and that other people may not have, as standard as they are for us (like, say, electricity and water). Take nothing for granted!

For some, it's not just that the economy is bad, but also, that they just want that extra much.

Well...since you mentioned the "Regan / Thatcher era"  I can't help but to think of Dead Kennedys.

Efficiency and progress is ours once more
Now that we have the neutron bomb
Its nice and quick and clean and gets things done
    Away with excess enemy
But no less value to property
No sense in war but perfect sense at home

The sun beams down on a brand new day
No more welfare tax to pay
Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light
    Jobless millions whisked away
At last we have more room to play
All systems go to kill the poor tonight

Hey Folks - Sorry not to follow up comment sooner, but the place where I'm being a Wage Slave at the moment does not allow access to my gmail account, nor does it let me log into MOG.

Anna - Very good point. How much do we really need as opposed to what we want? Life can be simple and good.

CB - Not only does that song revel in the idea of sticking it to the man, it shows us an excellent example of determination and ingenuity. And also living with what you get, even if it's not quite what you expected.

Lizzie - A very sweet proposal to add to the Economic TurnTable. Money does indeed change and impact relationships.

Sunny D - Isn't there a political party running on that Dead Kennedy's song? :-)   Yeah, shit, I was "the poor" in the 80s and that's what it felt like the government wanted to do to us.
