WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Executive Transvestite Riffs on School Bands

Posted about 1 year ago
Time for Friday Funnies. I had some folks comment on my recent avatar pix. It's British comedian / actor Eddie Izzard. He's does brilliant stand up shows, careening from one stretch of the imagination subject to another. He's also a transvestite. Actually an "Executive Transvestite." He's been focused more on his acting career (you might have seen him in the cable TV show "The Riches"), so, of late, he's been cultivating a more butch look. He also played the manager of the Bowie-esque character in the film "Velvet Goldmine", and Mr. Kite in the recent film "Across the Universe." This is a great piece of his exploring the complexities, weirdness and awfulness of kids taking music lessons and being in school band. Enjoy.

  1. FluxCapacitor says "We will shag him as soon as we know how!" Most amusing - much prefer his comedy to his acting, where he seems a bit neutered. But good luck to him, he's carving out quite a career on US TV.

  2. Marigold says I have not seen any of the shows you mentioned. But his stand up comedy was pretty funny. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Jonh Ingham says Love his dress sense. I want that jacket! My favourite Eddie joke, some 18 years later is....'Guy knocked on my door and said, "How would you like to go to the moon?" I told him "Don't be ridiculous, you have to be an astronaut to do that." His growing-up-with-wolves skit is brilliant as well.

  4. Mike the Knife says Eddie rocks on stage. And I totally bought into "The Riches," even when it faltered a bit. (Got kind of a crush on Minnie Driver, too.)

  5. HelenMarie says Great clip...loved this "you have the chance now...why don't you play it NOOOOW" "The pressure of being and adult" Haha....and that 3-year tuba sentence, cracked me up as well! I was fooled, I thought your attractive fairy avatar was a chick all the way!

  7. Lady Miss Ian says Flux - I agree. It's his comedy that really lets him fly. His acting parts always seem a bit fenced in. MG - Glad to introduce you to Eddie. In a way, he reminds of a bit of combo of Robin Williams and Steve Martin, early in their careers. Jonh - I know! He's always got the most amazing outfits. And I'm totally jealous of his ability to walk around on stage for hours in those high heels. Mike - I wish I had cable so I could at least check out The Riches. I know it's had mixed reviews. I'll have to bribe someone to tape it for me. And, yah! Minnie's a hottie. SunnyD - That cracked me up, too. Exactly what a kid would want to say. Loved the hammers thing and the way he worked it back in. Hey, he definitely looks like a chick in that fairy outfit. Some people wondered if it was me, since I have red hair. I wish! ;-) Hi Helen - You're looking very saintly in your avatar pix. St. Helen of the Dartboard??

  10. AA Coppertop says I've read he improvises a lot on stage. Can anyone confirm this?

  11. poebegone says i can't view the vid just now (awful friday night lag - my loss) but i certainly know the fabulous Eddie Izzard and his works on film, including Velvet Goldmine (am i the only one who digs Jonathan Rhys Meyers for his androgyny?) and Shadow of the Vampire. on a different note, is Across the Universe any good? i am still looking forward and waiting to see it.
