#40.3 - The National - Start a war
Uploaded by lablogotheque

I came across les Concerts à Emporter (Take Away Shows) a few months ago while trolling YouTube for Andrew Bird clips. The videos are made by the fine folks at blogotheque.net and director Vincent Moon and feature an eclectic range of musicians literally taking their music to the streets in Paris. The shows are spontaneous, accidental and intimate with a handmade, tattered-edge feel. Like the videos you make with your friends when the fourth bottle of wine convinces you that you have to capture this all on tape. The only difference is les Concerts à Emporter really are as good as you hoped they might be. There are over 60 bands featured, including Arcade Fire, Beirut, Mojave 3, Elysian Fields, Kria Brekkan, The Shins and on and on.

For your viewing and listening pleasure, I’ve posted videos from The National and Andrew Bird, and I’ll feature 2 new videos each Thursday

If you can’t wait that long, check out the full range of shows at: http://www.blogotheque.net/cae_tous_les_concerts_en.php3

Enjoy!

I bet you taking out the garbage is somehow cooler in Paris.

I've seen some of these before and they're all good. Thanks for posting these two.

So it's been out for about a month now and like every BSS project it hooked me right away but took some time to get under my skin. It's now burrowing in and hatching eggs.

It's interesting to have kevin drew take the lead (moreso than usual) and hear how his aesthetic shapes BSS. It was the same experience i had when I found Apostle of Hustle and heard Feist solo for the first time. they have such distinct sounds that weave together astonishingly well. Having said that, it does feel more spare than previous BSS work. Since he's most closely associated with the overall BSS sound as the band's primary vocalist and cofounder, it feels like there's some tension missing without 16 other people taking turns stirring the pot. still layered and beautiful and in regular rotation on my subway commute.

And if it's not enough to have the weight of the canadian indie music scene behind you, you can always have j mascis sit in. what's wrong with that? nothing...absolutely nothing

Nice thoughts. You really summed it up for me as well. I am totally into the BSS community. Every associate in the collective is insanely talented. It is also fun to see what each individual brings to the table. I was just listening to Do Make Say Think this week and see those influences in BSS. BSS is a community singing the praises of joy to the rock dejected world! I love it.

Backed out on the… is a rocking song. My least favorite of the record but still very strong. You just got to love having J. Mascis on a song. This disc is about as perfect a cd out there as any for me.

Robots in Disguise is an electro punk pop duo from the UK who've gained a solid following in Europe but are relatively unknown in the US. They're heading out on tour in UK/Europe but sadly it seems they won't be making the trip to the states - which is a shame because their live show is a girltastick explosion of post-punk joy.

Here's the video for Turn it Up and the track La Nuit, both from their last album Get RID. The Robots have a new single, The Sex Has Made Me Stupid, which hasn't dazzled but I'm looking forward to a new album - hopefully soon

The words "electro punk pop" are usually words that do not intrique me. But today they did. Thanks for sharing, I liked these songs. Thanks.

Glad you liked them - they're a weird mix of sounds and influences. They describe themselves as a blend of Gainsbourg, Chicks On Speed and Kraftwerk but I hear more Blondie and very early B52s (sans fred) with a touch of Human League thrown in for good measure.

the bass lines are what got me. Kind of had a Rapture thing going on with the bass.
