Dave Gleason

I saw in my weekly Mog report that Dave Gleason made my "song of the week." How those stats are calculated is always a mystery (hello, most played, Jay-Z? Um, sorry, but not exactly). Anyway, figured I 'd pass along a stream of one of my favorite new Dave Gleason tracks, from his brand new album. (You can also stream it in context with other "summer beat" tracks via this link.)

Richard Buckner's "Town"

I'm a little late in the game I guess, as Buckner's most recent album Meadow came out in 2006. Anyway, if any trace of Buckner's quasi-twang persona was still lurking in his music, the dark, churning surge of "Town"s melody has chased it from the room. New Lee Hazlewood

Lee Hazlewood's got a new album, "Cake or Death," and while it's not quite up there with monumental 60s/70s albums of his (or songs like "Nancy and Me," "Four Kinds of Lonely," and "I Move Around"), it is pretty damn good. Here's a taste--it's a song that I first heard done by Harry Johnson on the country comp "God Less America" (http://www.discogs.com/release/594490), and Lee's version is slow and

Silver Mount

Here's another gig I attended recently that I wonder if anyone else did: A Silver Mt Zion with Carla Bouzalich at Great American Music Hall (SF) last Monday (Aug 21). Man, I have always dug Carla's Geraldine Fibbers stuff (some of my favorite live shows ever), and her solo work, too, but damn, this time her set was way too self-consciously abstract, like an art-school interpretation of a Jim Morri

Bleeding Edge Festival

Anyone other Californians attend (or even hear of) the Bleeding Edge Festival a week ago, Aug 13 in Saratoga, Calif.? I was drinking coffee that a.m. and reading the local paper, saw a listing for it, and bang...an hour later I was in the car driving south. So damn little publicity on this thing! And so under-attended, which was too bad--though good for those of us who made it, as we got to hear Y
