OK, I realize that Doctor Who has nothing whatsoever to do with music (though I've always loved the theme song, it was a classic pioneer of electronica), but this is my blog and I can post whatever I want. So there! The SciFi Channel ran the Doctor Who Christmas special "Voyage Of The Damned" on Friday, and (as usual with the current Doctor) it was AMAZING. Kylie Minogue guest-starred, so if you need a musical connection, there it is.For those who live in another galaxy and have no clue about who the Doctor is (hint: His name isn't "Who"), he's an alien (specifically, a Time Lord) who, alone or with companions, travels through time and space, correcting wrongs in history, fighting evil aliens, exploring other planets, and just generally getting into lots of trouble. The Doctor started his travels in 1963, just 3 years before Star Trek came into existence. This makes Doctor Who the longest running science fiction television program in history (with a short hiatus in the 90's). The Doctor regenerates when he dies, which allows him to "grow" into another actor. The actor playing the current Doctor, David Tennant, is the tenth actor to get the role, and is one of the few actors who could best Tom Baker's record of (I think) 9 years in the part. The special effects in the current series are top-notch, much better than the old tin-foil and paper-mache monsters from the 60's. I have seen some of those episodes - schlocky, to be sure.I came into the Doctor on PBS in Denver in the mid-80's, during Tom Baker's run, and hung on well into Peter Davison's Doctor. In those days, the series was shown in 20 minute chapters on BBC, but on PBS here they showed all 5 episodes back to back, much easier to follow but you got very tired of the credits before and after each one!The Doctor's on SciFi at 9pm Eastern on Fridays. Give him a look if you're not already a Whovian!(oh, and the reason that I chose a Proclaimer's tune for the associated music is because they're a favorite of David Tennant.)
