The Brill building up steam

Posted over 5 years ago
Well, that was rather easy. I just put $9 in the pocket of fellow MOGger and Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer Paul Brill. Not in person though. There was a chain of events that preceded it. I was checking for .torrents (BitTorrents) to download of new episodes of Torchwood, a Doctor Who spinoff on the BBC, when I found a .torrent for Paul's latest album "Harpooner." (Not to be confused with the man/whale porn movie of the same name or say, something at www.hornymanatee.com) That's a dual-edged sword of course. Paul's tunes will be heard by many more people due to the fact that someone threw his hard work out there for others to grab. Paul might sell some more albums because of that... he may not. It may be a short term/long term thing. But, I'll let the artists about MOG speak more to that on their own as I feel a Hmmmm coming on...Hmmmm. I thought, I wonder if Paul's albums are available for download legally and unencumbered by DRM somewhere else on the Intarwebs? I had traded comments with Paul previously about this subject a couple months ago. (Which makes us best friends now, of course. He's totally going to hook me up with Jenny Lewis or Feist or someone like that. They all know each other in the biz. Joanna Newsome and I traded x-mas cards.)So, lo and behold, I discover Paul's store at Indie Kazoo. Here's the link: http://www.indiekazoo.com/paulbrill There you can either order one of those quaint 20th century inventions, the CD, or you can, for a few dollars less, git yoself some MP3s of Paul's albums. MP3s that can naturally be played on any device you please and transfered about the machines in your house (except maybe your toaster), burned to a CD for your car, lent temporarily to a friend to influence their purchasing decisions for new music, etc. A couple clicks later whereby my PayPal account directed an electronic withdrawal from my bank account to Paul's wallet (you can use a credit card if you choose and not involve PayPal). Next an e-mail arrives providing me with a temporary link from which to start my download of the album either as one .zip file or song by song if I so choose. I bravely went for the .zip file and through the magic of broadband, one of Paul's albums was mine in just a few minutes. (Hope he doesn't need it back or that that wasn't the only copy of course.)Now THAT'S the way it's supposed to go, people! First Barenaked Ladies, Jane Siberry and others and now Paul Brill of www.paulbrill.com fame. Unprotected music offered for easy payment and easy download nearly straight from the artist. That rocks and means many more listening opportunities for me the almighty consumer.Who have you delighted in being able to, more or less, get-it-from-the-source in terms of un-DRM'd MP3 files? Maybe they're a fellow MOGger too?
