There is so much ignorant backlash about this on the internet right now.
The comments section here: http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2007/05/beth_ditto_nude.html
is just one example. I think most people are missing the point. This is a political act. We live in society where thin-ness is praised above all other body types, and I can't think of one mainstream US magazine that would ever dare to put out Beth Ditto nude on their cover.

i think she's disgusting. sure all the size zero's are bad for the world's collecting psyche etc, but why do we have to go all the way to the opposite: a woman who will most likely die of a heart attack before her band splits up? Surely if this was 'girl power', we'd be looking at a standard sized woman, perhaps a size 12-14? Not a bloody size 22! The world needs a clue

Uh, Jake, there are people who can't help being what size they are. Should that force them to minimize their presence in this world to refrain from offending us? I would much rather see folds of flesh than ribs sticking out just below a surgically enhanced chest.

Some people live healthy, LONG lives as a size 22. Being that size does not always equal unhealthiness. And by the way, there is no such thing as a "standard sized woman."

i don't even get it - beth isn't THAT big. she's bigGER, but really i don't see anything wrong with her. there are people a lot, lot, LOT worse off in that respect.

Whoah. At least it isn;t another shot of the lemurs (Gallagher bros). What issue is this? We subscribe to NME but as Yanks we often get them very much after they've hit the streets. I agree with the sentiment of Ditto on this. I only wish I'd not just eaten.

The decision to put Ditto on the front cover may have something to do with Lily Allen's rant about NME last year. Here is an excerpt of it, from her blog... http://www.lilyallenmusic.com/
"This year's Cool List is a testament to the raft of hugely talented women who have taken hold of the music scene in 2006," he said. "From Beth to Lily to Karen, they've brought new energy to a scene dominated by men. They're also living proof that you can still rock a crowd when you're wearing stilettos."
I mean how fucking patronising " you can still rock a crowd wearing stilletos "
Is that all we are , stilleto wearing people , is that all he could say ,that we brought a " new energy" to the music scene . Don't make me sick , wev'e always been here you arrogant prick , this was your chance to actually show you meant it . And instead you put Muse on the cover . Cause you thought that your readers might not buy a magazine with an overweight lesbian and a not particularly attractive looking me , on the front . Wankers."
Lily Allen's weight related issues have been made incredibly public here, and she has been very open about it. Although it's terrible for her to go through this, it's good that she is highlighting what most young women feel. I think that both Beth Ditto and Lily Allen are beautiful. I am a 27 year old ex-anorexic and have only recently wised up to the fact that being skinny is not attractive. I am now curvaceous and pleased to be. I saw Amy Winehouse the other night; she was emaciated, as I used to be, and she looked terrible. Personally, I'd far rather see Beth Ditto posing naked than Amy Winehouse.
