Van Morrison's Contractual Obligation Album

Posted over 3 years ago
I was reading fairportfan's post on the Fairport Convention contractual obligation album (http://mog.com/fairportfan/blog_post/3851) and it got me thinking about my favorite contractual obligation album. In 1967, Van Morrison had to fulfill his contract with Bang records, and his frustrated response was to record a sincere sounding yet completely hilarious album. Most of the songs are under a minute in length and include such classics as "Want a Danish", "Twist and Shake", "Shake and Roll", "Jump and Thump" as well as my personal favorite: "You Say France and I'll Whistle". You just can't beat quality lyrics like "I'll whistle, you say France. No, no, you whistle, i'll say France".Listen to the album here: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/09/van_morrisons_c.html

  7. J-Rock says WFMU always has brilliant stuff going on-- did you check out 101 different covers of Stairway To Heaven? (I stopped listening after like two of them... I'm *so* sick of that song.) There was also a great album posted on WFMU of Batman theme tunes... recorded by Sun Ra. He and the Arkestra weren't credited, but it's them, and it's fantastic!

  9. fairportfan says Well, there was the time that Jagger and Richards had stupidly signed a contract with a sleezy promoter/manager (do rock stars sign conracts any other way?). They owed him songs. Like he owned the next twelve or so songs they wrote.. So they showed up at his office with a demo for a song called "Cocksucker Blues". I will not repeatany lyrics here, but they were of a piece with the title. "And," they beamed, "There are eleven more just like it!" _Another story:_ When Mike Nesmith was under contract to RCA, way back when, they called him in and told him that the sales on his three (or so) albums they'd released were just Not That Great and they figured it was because he was doing this sorta, well, Odd stuff that wasn't like the Monkees, and they really sorta thought that he needed to record some hits next time, or they were regretfully gonna have to... So his next album was scored for something like accordion and chamber orchestra (not really, but i remember it *wasn't* scored for guitar bass drums and maybe keyboard). The title? *The Hits Just Keep on Comin'*
