SOUNDS OF FUTURE PAST AND PRESENT PERFECT

Curly-Haired Mountain Boys

Posted over 3 years ago
Since I am still (happily) stuck in the world of vinyl and without digital listening capabilities for the time being, I thought I would talk about my favorite Tim Buckley record, "Happy Sad". In high school, I would drive over to my friend Tiffany's house in the little town of Sierra Madre. She lived in a great old house at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. We would sit in her shack, a wooden building nestled in her garden, and talk about our favorite "curly-haired mountain boys". This designation was reserved for any singer/songwriters that made us want to do things like take hikes in bramble-filled forests or explore deserted beaches. Tim was first on the list, as well as Nick Drake, Robin Williamson and Richard Farina. The song "Buzzin' Fly" still takes me back to wandering around Topanga Canyon, startling deer as I walked. "Gypsy Woman" makes me a lovestruck teenager again, crushing on some oblivious guy. And "Love from Room 109 at the Islander (on Pacific Coast Highway" has always made me wish I lived closer to a beach.Listen to the album here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000005IU0/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/102-6421168-6806542?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=5174Watch Tim Buckley sing "Song to the Siren" on the Monkees TV show here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JAT859NotE&search=tim%20buckleyand read the happy/sad reminiscences of Tim's guitarist, Lee Underwood in the book "Blue Melody: Tim Buckley Remembered": http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0879307188/ref=pd_rvi_gw_2/102-6421168-6806542?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155

  1. Killa says i appreciate this so much more knowing where topanga canyon is, makes me wish that hiking with a boombox on your shoulder sounded more reasonable than it actually is, since i don't own an ipod and all
