The Great Vinyl Haul of 2006

Posted over 2 years ago
Hey everybody! I'm on vacation here in Hell A and I thought i'd celebrate the end of JSGuntzel's "Month of the Phonograph Record" by talking about the records I got a few days ago. My uncle's neighbor moved up to Portland and gave him all her vinyl and my brother and I were given free reign to take whatever we wanted. Free vinyl = happy Kate! Here is some of what I scored:Terry Riley: Shri Camel and In C: Finally I have some more Riley vinyl. Larry Coryell & Philip Catherine: Twin-House Guitar Duos: I have a huge soft spot for Larry Coryell, who has been described as "the most inventive and original guitarist since Charlie Christian." Erik Satie: Piano Music performed by Aldo Ciccolini. Ciccolini is my favorite interpreter of Satie's music. Ry Cooder: Borderline. Mary Wells' Greatest HitsPatrick Sky: Sky was a folk singer on Vanguard. I haven't listened to this record yet, but if I were to judge it strictly by the record label, it's gonna be good.Staple Singers: Be What You AreDjurdjura: Groupe de Femmes Algeriennes: A pretty well-known Algerian record that got a lot of play on world music shows in the early '80's.Bruno Hoffman: Music for the Glass Harmonica: Hoffman rubs the edges of glasses with his fingers to create music. Need I say more?Itzhak Perlman & John Williams: Violin and Guitar duo.Ike & Tina Turner: River Deep - Mountain High: Oh, Phil Spector, you were once so amazing. Why'd you have to go and commit murder? The Youngbloods: Earth Music: You can't go wrong with Jesse Colin Young. Well. maybe you can, but this is a fantastic record.I was also given a copy of Fly by Yoko Ono for Xmas by Spencer. It comes with a badass Yoko and John poster.Aaaaaand, I bought this: Aluminium is an avant-garde classical music project by Jack White. 10 White Stripes songs done orchestral by a British orchestra. My vinyl copy is #317 of 999. I'm not a huge W.S. fan, but this record is beautifully done. You can hear selections here: http://www.alumiiinium.com/Happy New Year!

  4. Kate says I couln't believe that she was giving up all this vinyl either, but I am not one to look a gift-horse in the mouth! I think some people get to a point where they feel like records are a hassle to deal with. I doubt I will ever be one of those people.

  5. Mike the Knife says Riley, Cooder, the Turners, the Staples and the Youngbloods! Score! Been thinking about scaling down the vinyl collection for space and cash reasons, but it'll be difficult.

  6. Cody B says Kate says: I couln’t believe that she was giving up all this vinyl either, but I am not one to look a gift-horse in the mouth! I think some people get to a point where they feel like records are a hassle to deal with. I doubt I will ever be one of those people. Cody B I used to say that too Kate, but when I moved to the Virgin Islands, I just had to let go. It really was painful. Since that time I inherited my Grandfather's vinyl, but I had to store it at a friends house 'cause he's got the room for it. Congrats on your haul, I love me some free music stories!!

  8. Spike says Looks like you found all the great ones, kate. When that happens, until you get the chance to listen to them you can enjoy the keen anticipation. Think of your vinyl archive as a priceless cultural treasure, Mike, and you'll easily find good methods to preserve it intact.

  9. lemontwist says I have heard about that Aluminum project. Sounds cool but I'm not enough of a Jack White fan to buy one (and I'm poor). Enjoy your vinyl!! :)

  12. Gritshake's Garage says hi kate patrick sky has his moments, but sometimes tended to be a little too dylan sounding for his own good...he was often criticized for being a "dylan knock-off" Vanguard will be releasing too long out of print albums of his in January...including previously unreleased tracks...digital-only releases on iTunes. have fun

  14. ScottyB says And what a haul it was! My wife has been threatening to get me a turntable for Christmas for the past two years, but I have always resisted...Living in Hong Kong doesn't leave me with a tremendous opportunity to rebuild my vinyl collection... But since discovering the Mogos and reading the vinyl junkies that float through the space, my resistance is weakening... Happy New Year!!!

  20. goodmusiconly says I have Aluminium, too ... I almost bought the vinyl because I wanted the screenprint that came with it, but opted for the CD, which still comes with smaller prints. I haven't had the chance to listen to it more than a few times ... not in love with all of it, but so far there are a few that I really like. Perhaps a few more turns will change my mind...

  21. Spencer Owen says Hey Kate ... you know you want to come back to Berkeley now. C'mon. I got the new Aaaaaiiiir aaaaalbuuumm...... (dangles it like a carrot before so many rabbits)

  22. The Time Machine says Outside of the size of all those records have you noticed how much easier it is to file away vinyl than it is to put away a CD. Records you can sort of "make fit" on a shelf or the floor versus taking a CD jewel box that has filled up a shelf and now move it down which you end up doing to every shelf if they are filled. Vinyl you can pretty much shove into the collection without all of that time consuming moving around. :)

  23. Kate says Yeah. I've pretty much given up on CDs. I put them on my hard drive then sell them. Vinyl is so much more wonderful to have strewn about the house.
