WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

La Bise Aux Hippies

Posted over 2 years ago
I don't think there is much I can say about Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot that hasn't been said already. I can, however, offer up a swingin' video that you probably haven't seen: A 1967 duet between Bardot and Sacha Distel with Gainsbourg miming guitar. If you like this, pick up the DVD Divine B.B., a compilation of tons of wild Bardot music videos, available here.

  4. levek says I've always thought BB was atrocious as a singer - that badly synched video didn't change my mind. The only real guitar player in it was Sacha Distel who was a jazz guitarist before becoming a crooner. I say 'was' because he died 4 years ago. Bardot had 'sentimental' relationships with both Gainsbourg and Distel ....at the same time????

  6. Kate says I've always enjoyed Bardot's singing. Her charm shines through and makes up for her lack of pipes.

  7. Pseudo Cyborg says "Her charm shines through and makes up for her lack of pipes." That's exactly one of the reasons I like France Gall.

  11. Mike the Knife says Zut alors! Magnifique! But it doesn't quite top the clip for "Les Sucettes" by France Gall with the dancing candy sticks and the, er, sweetly innocent scenes of oral gratification. http://mog.com/Mike_the_Knife/blog_post/95845

  15. ivylander says From our old buddy Wikipedia: Bananadine is a fictional psychoactive substance which is allegedly extracted from banana peels. A recipe for its extraction from banana peel was originally published as a hoax in the Berkeley Barb in March 1967. A banana peel.It became more widely known when William Powell, believing it to be true, reproduced the method in The Anarchist Cookbook in 1970 under the name "Musa Sapientum Bananadine" (referring to the banana's binomial nomenclature). Researchers at New York University have found that banana peel contains no intoxicating chemicals, and that smoking it produces only a placebo effect. Over the years, bananadine has become a popular urban legend. Donovan's hit single "Mellow Yellow" was released the same month as the Berkeley Barb hoax, and for years it was (wrongly) assumed "Mellow Yellow" was the source for this myth. In an October 2005 interview on the National Public Radio program "Fresh Air", Donovan said that it was actually the folk singer Country Joe McDonald who had started the rumor in San Francisco, one week before the release of Donovan's song. Mr. McDonald has told a similar story, including the side effect of a shortage of bananas in all of Berkeley following the concert that started the rumor, as all available bananas were bought by concert-goers for experimentation (2003, Palms Playhouse, Winters, CA). The myth was brought to attention once more in the late 1980s, when the satiric punk group The Dead Milkmen released a song concerning the effects of smoking banana peels. Even the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated. In the inner sleeve of Experience, the first full length album by British band The Prodigy, Leeroy Thornhill is quoted saying "Respect to everyone I've met, you're welcome round to smoke some Banana skins anytime".

  16. contrabandwidth says I believe there is something in ??Electric Kool Aid Acid Test?? about the Donovan line "Electrical Banana", where I believe it referred to a yellow automobile or vehicle with lights all over it that one of the people involved with the acid tests was driving around. I'm really racking my brain over the specifics, but I remember someone (perhaps Country Joe) talking about that line. Anyone else come across this anecdote?

  17. HelenMarie says ivylander- that's pretty damn interesting and hilarious... "the side effect of a shortage of bananas in all of Berkeley following the concert that started the rumor, as all available bananas were bought by concert-goers for experimentation" (nodding head in somewhat disbelief)- thats great. : ()

  18. Girlcrawl says Bardot's song voice is utterly charming, and I've always found it somehow strangely comforting; damn trippy video clip!

  19. Bartleby says Does anybody know another song by Serge Gainsbourg called "Chez les Yé-Yé" in which Serge vows to go and save his beloved from the Ye-Ye aka hippies?
Incidentally, the title means something "A Kiss For The Hippies" not "cold wind" as Google would have you think ;)

  20. Kate says I know the Serge song, but I am pretty sure Ye-Ye refers to a style of music, not hippies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y%C3%A9-y%C3%A9 There are tons of great music blogs that specialize in Ye-Ye music, like this one: http://members.tripod.com/ye_ye_girls/home.html

  21. Bartleby says Apologies Kate. I wasn't quite clear. You're right Yé-Yé has nothing to do with hippies. However, in French it's come to be understood as hippies, straying from its original meaning. It's just an distortion to tell you the truth.
Incidentally, what's your favourite song by Serge?

  22. Kate says Oh dear, my favorite Serge song changes all the time. Here's my top 5 this week: 1. Sea, Sex and Sun 2. Mister Iceberg 3. Melody 4. Vielle Canaille 5. Goodbye Emmanuelle Good question, it was fun to think about that! What about you?

  23. Bartleby says Geez. That's a tough one. It depends on my mood of the moment I guess. I'd say something like: (no particular order)
    - 69 Année Erotique
    - L'anamour
    - Requiem pour un con
    - En Melody
    - La Décadanse
Mr Iceberg is cool, if you'll excuse my bad pun ;)
