Update on things: Punk 101, Jon Langford, Kaspar Hauser

Posted 8 months ago

Hi MOG,

It's been a while as usual but for those of you who check in about the punk class or Kaspar Hauser, thought I'd put a little info here.

I'm scheduled to teach the Punk 101 course next spring (2010), and as always I appreciate any tips on new articles/books/movies/reissues that people have come across. I am still trying to track down a copy of the Sex Pistols movie DOA about their North American tour in 1978. Online prices are pretty outrageous -- so if anyone can help me out here, that'd be cool. I did just meet Chris Connelly a few weeks ago -- and we talked for some time about things punk -- his experience with it in Edingborough, long before signing on with the Ministry/Revolting Cocks, etc. so he may well be a guest alongside Jon Langford next time to talk about the regional punk scenes beyond London -- probably the most interesting (though less storied) "punk" emerges from the hinterlands (Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Manchester, etc. etc.).

Anyhow, my band Kaspar Hauser has put out its new record, The Sons, in true DIY fashion, and we had a really great show last month with Jon Langford headlining. He played a lot of songs from his Gold Brick record which is out on ROIR -- a gem of rocking, folky, country-splashed yarns and rants songs concerning European colonization of North America. Anyhow, The Sons, is hitting college radio right now so hopefully you'll hear it if you listen left of the dial these days. We have played/will play a few dates outside Chicago, but we're also making tentative plans to do an actual tour in the fall -- in some cases playing some of the colleges who have been pretty enthusiastic in response to the record. If you would like to help out with that, drop me a line. It'll likely be a week out east and back (from Chitown) plus another week around the midwest.

Thanks, MOG. Talk to you again soon.

Yrs, TC of KH
