THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

Muse, San Francisco, 4/9/07

I have seen MUSE, and my life is complete.I was smushed up in the front before they came out (having never been to a Muse show, you see) about 12 ft from the stage, where it was already like the New York 1 train, 8:45am. This guy behind me warned me that once they get on stage everyone around us was going to move forward 10 ft, which as you now look at the beginning of this paragraph only means that 12 ft of sardinepeople were going to move into 2 ft of space. Of course, I thought it impossible. Of course, it happened and BOY was I scared to death I'd get squashed. It HURT! And there was no where to put my feet and if I put them down they got stepped on, so I found that if I lifted them up I was held up anyway. I got out of there for 5 min and then they started playing Butterflies and Hurricanes. So no way was I going to see Muse from further away - I have been an addict (seriously, why is their music like crack??) for way too long without seeing them live. Girls, if it doesn't bother you, four-inch stillettos are an amazing help when you're watching from the floor and stand a natural five-five. Sorry to anyone I may have punctured. When I got home I immediately took a hot bath and my feet were two big bruises, my rib hurt, can't raise my right arm, my knee makes a funny popping noise, and a few battle wounds on my arms. I don't care - more than 24 hours later and I still can't wipe this smile off my face. I truly have a masochistic addiction to MUSE. What is the first song you guys put on after a show? A song that they didn't play, or your favorite from the show? Etc?

  1. dj ivi says that's such a beautiful review! i'm with you about the stilettoes. i don't like to wear skinny heels, but i sometimes wear my highest shoes for that exact purpose! it really helps for taking concert photos. i hope you don't feel the pain for too long!

  2. voxjubilante says I must be getting old. I tend towards little to no music after a show these days - go easy on the ringing, fuzzy ears. If I do listen to anything after a show it's usually gentle - think Satie's piano works or some other 'light' classical, Bill Evans, Eno's ambient music, Nick Drake, etc. - sometimes just the keening wail of my dying auditory nerves. Also depends on what show I was at... Usually, however, chill is the ambiance. 2 shows cured me of going into the pit or anywhere near the front of the stage, both back in '90 - '91: Ministry/KMFDM/Skatenigs and The Pixies/Pere Ubu show, both at the Austin Opera House (a bit of a misnomer for a cavernous warehouse-like structure with a concrete floor and no seating.) The pit at the Pixies show was nasty. This was when moshing was just making the move from punk/indie rock subculture to mainstream frat boy idiocy. I lost a shoe. And somehow found it again. I also couldn't seem to get away from the giant PA speakers just to stage right. I was right up front and center for the Ministry show but had retreated to the back of the auditorium by the time they took the stage - by the time KMFDM had left the stage, actually. I felt sore for days after that one - and not just from the pummeling I took in the pit. It was also incomprehensibly loud. I'm-sure-alarm-bells-were-going-off-in-NORAD-loud. The-neighbors-in-the-universe-next-door-must-have-been-banging-on-the-walls-of-time- and-space-furious-loud. I was pretty much completely deaf the next day - not even ringing in my ears - I actually had to read lips a bit to understand what people were saying when they spoke to me. I distinctly remember standing perfectly still near the back of the auditorium and watching curiously as my sagging, sodden T-shirt (it was hanging around me a little over-sized and I was a lot skinnier) jumped in time to the music like it was a soggy speaker cone. Together, those two shows probably account for the majority of my hearing loss. Ah, to be young and stupid again.
