So I bought Maroon 5's new cd yesterday, and well, I wasn't a fan of their new single but let me tell you something that a lot of people don't know about M5.
Their last cd, "Songs About Jane" was recorded by the band themselves as something to take to record companies to sell in hopes of getting signed. Well, the record company had liked what the band had done on their own so much that they decided to mix and master what M5 had done on their own and release it.
So when I heard they were finally coming out with a follow-up cd, I decided to buy it regardless of my distaste in the single. Seeing what the band could do with company money and unlimited expertise in studio production intrigued me.
"It Won't Be Soon Before Long" starts off with a few annoying disco songs, that unfortunately grow on you and get stuck in your head easily but moves towards rock and then a few really incredible ballads including this song, "Goodnight, Goodnight." Amazing stuff.

while I agree it's a beautiful song and smashing pumkins is a great band I cannot accept the underrated label being used to describe them. Here's why: they are often commented on in the same sentance if not the same breath as Nirvana, STP, and the other greats of the grunge era. Also they get due credit for creating the post grunge alternative genre. Not exactly accomplishments of an underrated band.
While some may consider those great accomplishments, all that says to me is that people think they are a novelty. I personally cannot stand Nirvana, and Stone Temple Pilots are nobodies. I mean, seriously. The Smashing Pumpkins are not a grunge band by any means, nor were they ever. Even Gish could have been a cool rock record if it had been produced with better quality and guitar tone.
My bottom line is that Billy Corgan was one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and the softer stuff off of Mellon Collie was the most advanced to come out of the 90's because it is so timeless.
I'm not attacking you here, (merely defending one of my favorite bands) but whether you have or haven't, listen to "To Forgive," "Cupid De Locke," "Galapagos," "Muzzle," "Thirty-Three," "In The Arms of Sleep," "Stumbeline," "We Only Come Out At Night," "Beautiful," "By Starlight," "Lily (My One and Only," "By Starlight," and "Farewell and Goodnight."
Even if those songs were put on a record by themselves, it would be better than most music that came out in the 90s, or even now.
My biggest point about The Smashing Pumpkins is they are so overlooked as being this hard rock band. They are one of my favorite bands, and I don't even like hard rock music, especially not hard rock from the 90s. My favorite part about their writing is how they can write these beautifully composed soft songs, then just blow everyone up with heavy songs like, "An Ode To No One." Not to mention Billy's incredible lyrical ability or song construction puzzling (his songs don't follow any convention, like V, V, C, V, C, B, C).
Even on later cds that weren't big successes, like "Adore," and "Machina," there are gems of songs, true to any artist with real talent, and songwriting ability, and that's what Billy had.
When a band is polarized by critics and not given credit for all of the advancements and impact on music today, they are undoubtedly "underrated."
ok underrated at this point in time I'll give you that. This is kind of the lull they were huge they dropped in popularity. theyve gone out of vogue or whatever. don't worry the ratings arent all in they are a timeless band because theyre sound is so unique. and I don't know a single guy who dosn't have at least one Smashing Pumkins album in his collection. I have everything but Gish and machiena I even bought zwan. Hmm better put gish on my music to buy list. Anyway I'm looking at them from the perspective of what they were and in their hayday they were definantly not underrated. they are now possibly because people have moved on. But Billy will last and in 20 years I bet he'll be doing storytellers on vh1 and doing reunion tours with bands you hate. anyway peace man as fans of the same band we chould just relax and enjoy the music.
