About ten years ago, I was sitting in my elementary school cafeteria with my friends. We were just learning about the government and how it works when the topic of Presidents came up. We, being the wise 8 year olds we were, decided that while it would be extremely cool to have a black president, that would never happen, at least in the near future.
A decade later, I proved myself wrong. I am so glad I did.
This was my first election, Mr. Obama. I spent some of my weekends making calls for you and canvassing neighborhoods, because I believe in you and I trust you. I've only been an adult for a month and then some, but because of you I decided to make my voice heard, however young and naive people thought I was (and am). I'm so, so proud that my first vote was for such a historical event.
I worry about you though. I'm scared that this country, for all the progress it's made, will not allow you to ascend to presidency so easily. I admit, I fear for you. But I still have faith that you can make this country better. We just turned "Yes We Can" into "Yes We Did". And I couldn't be happier.
That said: please be careful. You are not "The Great White Hope" that this song speaks of or that many people wanted, but you are the new blue blood. This will be nothing like the speeches you practiced in front of the mirror, this is the real thing. I think you are ready, and I hope you're up to the task. Maybe you were never carried on the arms of cheerleaders, but you are now carried by the hopes of millions of Americans who have placed their trust in you to turn this country around.
Congratulations, Senator Obama. You are Mr. November. Please don't fuck us over.
- Jules.
P.S.- Sorry Dale, but I had to take poetic license with the swearing : )

Very well said...
Seconded! :-)
Didn't see a thing. :)
Bravo, Julia, well said!
I wish him all the courage in the world.
Historical election. I'm so happy!
Beautifully said Jules. What fires me up is that we got a President who seems to live in our times. I've been remembering what my Mum said back in 61 about JFK: with the world changing as fast as it is, we need a young man to lead us, not someone old. She was talking about Nixon, who was only 4 years older than Kennedy! But he thought old and acted old. You can never accuse Obama of either of those. Those of us outside the USA are starting to breathe hopefully again.
Mr. Frost and Mike - Thanks very much, you gentlemen are too kind.
Dale - Oh good, I was hoping you didn't!
Anna - As do I. And you and the rest of the world are celebrating right now, I'm sure.
Jonh - Oh, I hope they are. I definitely wasn't breathing when the results were coming in. I think Obama is something like a new JFK for my generation, he has energized so many of the youth into actually getting out there and voting! Maybe now the US can get around to apologizing for the last eight years...
"We, being the wise 8 year olds we were, decided that while it would be extremely cool to have a black president, that would never happen, at least in the near future."
You thought this at 8? Totally changed my perception of what the kids today think. Very nice post.
Yes, great post.
"Please don't fuck us over."
I'm sure he won't. But I wish Obama had ended his victory speech with, "And I promise, I won't fuck you over."
contra - believe it or not, i swear to you that's the truth. the next thing we decided after thinking how cool it would be for a black woman to be president. in another decade, who knows?
Mr. Capacitor - Thank you, I don't think he will either. And if he really ended his speech with that, well, I don't see how anyone could ever have voted against him!
