It's officially New Year's Eve in my neck of America. It's been quite a year, both for me personally and for music. I've decided not to make a list of the year's best albums this time around, mostly because I suck at making lists. Except playlists. That is a matter of personal pride for me.
So I've decided to upload my favorite song of 2007, rather than subject you all to one more damned year-end best-of list to argue over. I realize that it's a rather broad statement to say that one song stood out for me more than any of the thousands of other things I've listened to in the past 12 months, but in the end, this is the one thing that I keep coming back to.
Much has been blogged about of LCD Soundsystem's ??Sound of Silver??. And it deserves every bit of the praise that it's gotten. We all know that "All My Friends" is stunning and probably a new classic. "Someone Great" is...great. "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" is another favorite, not to mention one of my new favorite song titles. But I feel like another song has been overlooked, which brings us to "North American Scum", my favorite song of 2007.
It gets me every time. A new anthem, if you will. "And all the kids, all the kids that want to make the scene here in north america / Our young kids get to read it in your magazines (we don't have those)." ??Perfection??, I'm telling you. And on a completely relatable level for me too, being subscribed to UK publications and checking NME's website daily at school, looking for any news whatsoever of bands I love that are getting ignored in my own country. But it doesn't matter how many times I walk into Borders to see if they have the new Q; it doesn't matter how deep my love for the Britpop era goes; and it sure as hell doesn't matter that I generally like European music better, I'm still North American. And I'm fine with that. And I wish the rest of the world was completely cool with us too, but I realize that won't happen for a while. Until then, we have James Murphy to help us out.
Speaking of helping out..maybe I should make resolutions for this year. 2007 was the year that I really started MOGging. I've probably bought more CDs this year than I ever have before, especially after I started listening to what you guys were bringing up. I really cannot thank you guys enough for all of the wonderful comments, vibes, and music that you've sent my way. Everything is read, listened to, and appreciated. That said, I do have a few things (but about myself, mind you) I should probably change for the new year. Screw self-help resolutions, my main goal is to get on here and MOG more frequently. I'm going to branch out more and listen to stuff I wouldn't usually get into, mainly jazz and rap. But never show-tunes.
..And I think that's all for me during the year 2007. I hope you all have a great holiday and party safely. See you next year!
