Speechless

Posted about 5 years ago
So today I'm talking about music (as usual) and one of my friends didn't know who The Ramones were, and claimed he had never heard Blitzkrieg Bop. And he claims to be a music lover. Call me a snob, I was utterly speechless at his ignorance.

  1. MrFrost says I dont even listen to that kind of music, and I know who the ramones are. One of them died a few years ago right?

  2. SatisfiedMind614 says If your friend is over the age of 15 that is unforgivable

  4. chucky says Wait, maybe he does know the song but doesn't recognize the title? That's happened to me before. Did you play it for him?

  5. Joxley says I didn't play it to him, but did try to explain I to him with "You know the one that goes "hey ho lets go"" and sang a little more, which would be enough for most people who are vaguely familliar with the track i think.

  6. thill says feel free to apply a slap to the head of your friend.

  7. chucky says Hmm. Can you carry a tune? Maybe you were mangling it. Haha. See, I just think it's impossible he doesn't know it unless he's been locked in a basement somewhere for his entire life and just got out. When did you meet him? Maybe I'm on to something.

  8. thill says let me postscript my previous post: i don't usually advocate violence as a solution to any problem but sometimes some actions call for a slap to the head...maybe it would shake loose recollection.

  9. Nixne Svix says yeah and idiot , not a music lover. I met agirl once who didnt know what fucking Star Wars was or is ....i finished my drink went home and cried myself to sleep(thinking waht the fuck?)

  11. Dale says My six-year-old knows Blitzkrieg Bop. OK, he may not know the name, but if you said "hey ho, let's go" he'd be right there with you. So, to steal an image idea from CrashPryor:

  12. etcvisitor says i think im speechless. is your friend from a different country? maybe ramones means something else in botswana. im hoping this is a language barrier issue. make this person a mix tape now, you could be saving their lives.

  14. soda says Not everyone crawls out of the womb knowing their music history. Ive met bluegrassers who have never heard 'Stairway to Heaven' and I've met hipsters who have never heard of Bob Wills. Play 'em a CD, change their lives.

  15. lemontwist says Wow. Even Chris knows that song, and he doesn't know that many songs.

  16. debi says I love the Ramones..but always thought the song was called "Hey Ho, Let's Go" - so if someone asked ME if I knew Blitzkrieg Bop - I'd have said no But thats just me .I"m the same with books -read lots and lots but couldn't tell you titles two days after I read them!

  17. atman says if you're not gonna slap your friend upside the head you at least need to say to him "You've never heard of the Ramones, you are a dick."

  18. Torch says Wow - maybe refer him to the latest commercial this has been sold to (not that I'm much help in identifying the commercial... [/slaps self with large trout])

  19. Zeroskilz says If you played it for them they would probably know. Here, it might garner such responses as, "Yeah, that was the music in that Pepsi commercial." sigh.

  20. SamTheButcher says Ok, everyone's suggested various things - I'm going to suggest that he's actually come to the future from 1955. So the Ramones weren't actually a band yet, so he couldn't have heard of them. That's it.

  21. Jonh Ingham says I say revoke his music lover's license. Not listening with due care and attention.

  22. Mike the Knife says Some clever dick once said that the Museum of Modern Art in New York (or the Museum of Natural History) should have, on permanent exhibit, an audio-animatronic simulation of the Ramones that would play "Blitzkrieg Bop" every three minutes. Y'know - so future generations could see what it was like. I agree...
