Coming Up for Air

Posted over 3 years ago

Man its been a long time since I last really wrote one of these. But not just a long time. A frantic time. A time of change. A time of new friends both fleeting and lasting. Of old friends disappearing over a rapidly descending horizon. A life changing, life affirming time.

But also a time that hasn't quite sunk in.

With the forty hour weeks, the 3am parties, the 4am chill sessions and the 6am election nights stopping to think has barely been an option. Countless commitments snatching away the minutes, and when it all ends the necessary respite of sleep consumes the few wee hours. I remember a time when spending 6 hours in a library sounded like hell, now it sounds like an easy day. I remember when staying up late was an exciting privilege, not a practical necessity.

Still, it sounds like I'm complaining. I'm not. However overwhelming the last 5 weeks have been, not one moment of them have been regrettable. Well, apart from maybe that night I passed out drunk on the toilet. Or the time I fell down the stairs drunk. Or tha... well you get the picture. But that said, I wouldn't swap this experience for the world.

I've had so many good times, experienced so much that I never thought I would. Experienced things I didn't even know happened. Met people I didn't think existed.

But enough of me and the romance of these old stone buildings. This site was never meant to be about vanity, it was meant to be about community. And music. And that's something I must say I'm missing. The junkies seem to be thin on the ground around here. Decent record shops even thinner. And decent live music, well, Lily Cole is studying here, and the gig lists make even her look fat. I may have gained a lot, but this detective has lost his leads. I'm out of the loop, and if I have to listen to Basshunter played non-ironically one more time, I may cut my own ears off.

So my lovely moggers, come in, kick your shoes off...make yourself at home. Tell me how you're doing, tell me what I've missed, what I need to listen to right now and any thing else that springs to mind. I've got some £6 vodka and some £0.18 coke, but you may have to wash your own glass. Let's all just chill, and enjoy the e-room party that is MOG...

It's alright, we got your detective back! "Wild Beasts":http://mog.com/Anna/blog/211178, Joxy, Wild Beasts.

You miss us, you really miss us! We're irreplaceable (what was that about -collective- vanity?).

Darn, I've only fainted drunk on a sidewalk, I always wanted to do it in a toilet.

    Miss you lots!

    xoxo

PS "Experienced things I didn't even know happened" care to elaborate? ;P

Oh, and I'm doing well. Nothing new on the job front, so I'm distracting myself with a film festival week, and a trip to London this weekend to meet up with Helen and Neill (maybe that's when I can get on with my pass-out-drunk-in-a-toilet plan).

Hey I didn't mean that sort of thing. But the pyjama pub-crawl was definitely a new one on me.

Believe me, you don't want to pass out on a toilet. You feel like you were very vulnerable when you wake up...

Good to know you're still with us. Waking up when you have no idea what you did for the last several hours of the night is when you feel vulnerable. :-) Don't go there - at least not too often. New sounds? Our own Neil Nathan has been making me feel good.

    hello back! the pile of new releases i'm listening to is taller than me so i'm pretty confused and overwhelmed, but i'm guessing not as confused and overwhelmed as you falling down the stairs drunk. don't forget to chase hard liquor with beer, and beer with hard liquor. works for me. (;

Glad to see you're back in the fold!

Seconding the Wild Beasts and School of Seven Bells recommendations.

As for me, I've been listening to plenty of Canadians lately (it's the aftertaste of seeing/meeting Broken Social Scene). The Most Serene Republic, Jason Collett, Apostle of Hustle, Chad VanGaalen...the list goes on.

And Jox, it could be much worse. I had a friend who passed out throwing up in the toilet, hit his head on the bowl, and had to be rushed to the emergency room.

Oh I almost forgot! You need to check out Emmy the Great. She lives up to the name, I promise.
