So I'm going to post this tragic cover version by the Spice Girl also-rans.Interesting fact: the session musician who played guitar on this track was none other than Pulp (and mercury prize nominee) Richard Hawley. You still gonna tell me British pop is good Dale?

  1. ciaran says No, but I will. Their new track is a cracking piece of meaningless bubble-gum, but with awesome production...

  2. Joxley says I'd say most of the girls' stuff is quite listenable, but the RHCP cover is just plain dire.

  3. ciaran says Oh yes - no argument on that. Could I posit the idea that a lot of the RHCP own versions of their songs are pretty bad?

  4. lemontwist says Jox - that was awful. I couldn't listen more than 20 seconds before turning it off.

  5. Joxley says Can you believe it got to number 2 in the charts? Or that it was beaten to number 1 by this....

  6. Dale says Wow, I got called out, in the MOG-o-Sphere no less. And no, I don't think all British pop is good, but even if you just count Girls Aloud, Sugababes, and The Pipettes, that's a much better percentage than you'd get in the US, where ALL the pop is dire. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. :P

  7. Violet Grey says There are two types of covers; the kind that doesnt add anything new to the song and the kind that strays too far from the original. I have heard bands perform covers very well, finding that subtle balance and just staying honest to the song itself. THis is one of the latter though. I goes too far from the song and destroys the core emotinoal content in an attempt to add a cool "flavor of the moment" sound to it. This goes in the same catagory with 311's cover of "Love Song".

  8. ciaran says Dale - I like you more every day. My wife keeps laughing at me because I want to buy the best of Girls Aloud. It doesn't make me gay does it?! BTW - Amerie, 1 Thing just came on my iTunes, and that 1 song is better than the combined pop of the UK for the last 2 years (and I say that as a confirmed Brit when it comes to music.....
