Fire Away

Ever since reviewing I Know You're Married I've been lapping up Martha W's aural love, and that has led me back to this fantastic collaboration with Snow Patrol..
For me, this is easily SP's best song, perfectly capturing the longing, pain and frustration of yearning for someone you can't be with, when everything seems empty without that person near, when in your mind you'd run through walls, over burning coals and broken glass to be by their side, but more mundane, insurmountable obstructions block your way. At the same time you want to take on the world and curl into a ball, overwhelmed by difficulty, but wishing you could take on every challenge. The result is a truly enchanting song, with a first verse that never fails to melt my heart.
But this track made me think of what a wonderful, and popular, songwriting motif fire is - it exudes passion, beauty and danger, instantly setting your emotions alight. So here are a few more fiery favourites -
Biffy Clyro - Who's Got a Match?
An explosion of a song, that rushes and engulfs everything around it, leaving nothing left, an utterly destructive blast.
Franz Ferdinand - This Fffire
This song starts off as a stylish smoulder, barely attracting your intention, until... whoof... the fire rises up into wild abandon.
Foo Fighters - Burn Away (red button)
Sometimes destruction is a good thing - the word carthartic comes from the Greek for destruction - just as a bonfire is good for clearing away rubbish, so too must we turn on the emotional incinerator from time to time.

what a keen music theme!
i love the martha/snow patrol song so much. it reminds me of a long-distance relationship i was in once, and how much the distance grows as the love heightens. the obstacles of miles, which despite the phone calls, letters, emails, music shared, sometimes feels as insurrmountable as that one-sided glass they are singing to each other through, in the video.
i love martha, and snow patrol both - new album in october for sp, wonder how it will be.
burn away & this fffire...perfect...
a little something to add to your theme:
Good stuff.
That's my second favourite Snow Patrol song after Make This Go On Forever! You describe it so well.
I'll research a bit, and be back with favourite fiery songs :)
Here's a few of mine, the first one is good to be dumped too;

Amongst my favourite fire tunes one can find:
Girls Against Boys - Super-Fire
Interpol - Fired Up
Puressence - Fire
Prodigy - (could easily go for Firestarter or Fuel My Fire, but this is so sexy) Spitfire
that's one of my favorite snow patrol songs as well. i've never seen the video though...that was truly haunting.
Why fire? there are so many songs that use some form of fire as symbol. Easy enough to see why; it was the favorite tool of our ancestors, providing light, heat, and protection. And yet, at the same time, it can turn on us so quickly.
So, on that note:
Tom Vek - You Set The Fire In Me
Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire
I got a funny one. This is a 2004 performance of Fire & Desire by Rick James & Teena Marie. Many suspect that they were both drunk and/or high, but they're both such lovable characters that everyone enjoyed the performance and took it in stride.
4 years later I still hear people mentioning this like "yo do you remember Rick James doing Fire & Desire at the BET awards? Man he sure was fucked up"
and just in case you're curious to hear what the song is supposed to sound like by people who are not under the influence.... here is the proper version.
lol...Fire and Desire is one of my favorite songs. Damn, they were clownlin'!
Hot stuff, baby!
