Hanging Round Sam's Town

Well one of the few perks of living this time zone is that I get a few hours head start on new albums:)Sam's Town sounds to me like exactly what you'd you expect from The Killers, it bursts into life with the energetic title track, and from then on seems to constantly soar and swoop in the most epic of fashions. Almost every track on here could come from "Stadium Rock 101", with rousing guitars and lyrics that were surely designed for you to shout at the top of your voice. The main album is bracketed with a quite bizarre "enterlude" and "exitlude" tracks, which declare "it's good to have you with us, even if it's just for a day", this kinda makes you feel welcome, but more importantly, would make a damn good way to start and end a concert. The album isn't all radio-friendly singles though, with My List and Why Do I Keep Counting, soundlike "The Killers meet The White Stripes". These quiter songs are just what you need to let you catch your breath and prevent you from being totally of exerted. Sam's Town is perfectly in keeping with Hot Fuss, but also shows a band that has grown, both musically and lyrically. There are obivous nods to Joy Division, and some tracks seem like they could have been lifted straight from Editors, and while Flowers no longer rellies on "dick related wordplay" for his songs, the lines are still catchy enough to have you singing along. If you liked Hot Fuss you should definately take the trip to Sam's Town, but it will be of little intrest to those not already famillar with The Killers. In a way that's my only critiscism of this album, they seem to have played it safe a bit, not taken many musical risks. But does that really matter? Sam's Town may not be truly great album, but it's a pretty good Killers CD, and that'll ding-dang-do for me!
