WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Where Were You When You First Heard Neil Hamburger?

Posted over 3 years ago
I was just listening to my iTunes 'religious' smart playlist set to shuffle (see my previous post) when 'Nebraska' from Neil Hamburger came on. I was instantly taken back to the first time I ever heard Neil Hamburger. My old band was on tour in June 2001. As anybody who's ever gone on a road trip in a car or van knows there's that special time when everybody is silent, just staring into space, zoning out and involved in his or her own thoughts. That's exactly how it was. I was driving and everybody else in the van was just zoning out, thinking about whatever. My guitarist was sitting in the passenger seat; he very quietly, and, now that I think about it, with a slight sardonic smile on his face, inserted Neil Hamburger's '50 States 50 Laughs' into the cd player. He just sat back and waited for the reaction. After about five minutes I could tell everybody was beginning to break out of their silent reveries, I heard some shifting in seats and a couple of snickers. After a few more minutes it was full on laughter, people falling on the floor, demanding to know who it was we were listening to.Where were you when you first heard Neil Hamburger?Never heard "Neil Hamburger?":http://www.americasfunnyman.com/

  1. Bee K says I was on a solo tour in Chapel Hill NC in May 2005 and the record store cleark I'd met earlier in the day convinced me to go after my show had ended. Pleeeaseosaur open for him. Both were hilarious.

  3. Josh Haden says I saw both of them over here a couple of weeks ago at Neil's dvd release party. Both were incredibly funny. Neil threw about ten different drinks on the same heckler in the front row. Then Tom Green got on stage and made the heckler leave. I got the Pleaseeasaur cd 'The Yellow Pages' at the show and its very funny, it has all their hits. Very much in the same 'vein' as Neil.

  4. Nebula says Hello Josh Just read your column and I found it very interesting. Since a teenager, I was always into ancient Egypt especially around the 18th Dynasty and have books about Akhenaten and his city. Neil sounds like a great commedian but unfortunately we will never get to hear him in Britain, but I look out for his CD on Amazon. I'm also interested in the music you produce, although I never heard a note but the concept seems promising. I'll be a regular visitor here to see when your albums are being released. Thanks. I wish you all the best.

  6. Nebula says Cheers for the list Josh, I try and get down to one of the London gigs in December. My friend and I are into comedy and she needs cheering up after having been through breast cancer. Tenacious D are brilliant. Love Jack Black's humour. My daughter recently brought the DVD 'School of Rock' with her birthday money she got on her 12th. Many thanks.
