MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

That headline made me think it was rootkit all over again. No, it's a reference to our favourite waste of time's new funding.

From Digital Music News:

Big labels are starting to spread their investments beyond artists and smaller recording and publishing entities. In fact, nosebleed deals involving both artistic and executive talent are starting to wane, leaving room for more strategic investments in promising startups.

That includes MOG, a music-focused social network that recently rustled $2.8 million from a round that included Sony BMG and Universal Music Group. The round, specifically handled through Universal Music Investments and Sony BMG Music Investments, also involved Angel Fund 74.

MOG, which claims a unique userbase of one million, secured an earlier round valued at $3.2 million. The latest round was first revealed by VentureBeat.

I was watching a review of the new GTA and I think I saw a joke Mog page in it, as well. Is my little world shrinking, or did it just get bigger? I'm very happy Mog is getting this attention, hopefully we can still "keep it real".

Laura,

So your saying if Sony BMG and Universal Music Group offered you a cool few mill you wouldn't take it?

If you can't bite the hand that is trying to feed you, what use are you? Seriously, I have wondered about the economics of this website for music heads. Collectively, we probably represent a very desirable market. I know I still buy non-DRM, mostly CD and vinyl at (gasp) record stores, have iTunes, and catch the occasional gig and my jones for music in several formats probably costs me more than $100 and less than $1000 a month. Don't sell your sell that short Anna, don't you know the dollar aint what it used to be? I'd be happy if I'd ever get my Mog shirt I was promised as Mogger of the week...ahem (Sturgel)...perferably one of those brown ones that says "I knew about this place before any of you guys." Just so it sets me apart.

With the notifications down and probably no catch-up on the missed posts, I'm really glad I caught this one.

In my opinion, it was bound to happen. There's no such things as "free" or "gratis" on this planet. With Sony and BMG on board, I wonder if we'll still be able to upload "individual" tracks as we're doing now.

The whole MOG model will certainly be revised. Perhaps, you'll need to be a member to be able to listen to anything at all. -- Was Rhapsody the Trojan Horse for more majors/industry integration at the expense of the music addicts?

uploading is fine.

bartleby, 20 people work here. we don't suport ourselves and families from donations. money has to come in. we're going to sell ads too. such is life.

that being said, mog will be mog. just better.

and if anything, more access for free. not less.

Hey, notifications seem to be back. Thanks to everyone at MOG.

Don't get me wrong, David. I'm really thrilled at the news. It means that MOG is thriving and its success is acknowledged by major players, not only music-castaways.

I was just voicing some little concerns of mine but rest assured I'll stick to MOG and its community. The greatest casting of music-lovers on this planet.

contrabandwidth - do tell where you saw this review of GTA! players can actually surf the web in the new game, GTA IV. i believe there are only like 100 websites available, but it is totally possible that MOG is one of them. I am so hyped about that game, i can't believe i haven't played yet! seriously, link the review you saw, please. :)

That should keep the wheels greased for a bit, so it's surely good news for all the busy bees at MOG HQ. However, since I know very little about how this sort of investment works, I'd be curious to know whether Universal and Sony are getting in return anything special, apart from whatever usual returns may accrue to their financial investment. Are they pretty hands-off, or do they want privileged promotions for their artists, or what?
