MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(28)

My good friend Jon Savage has compiled a 6CD mixtape set of Punk Psych. What an amazing racket of crunching beat and lysergic anthems, full of songs called "Mirror Of Your Mind", 'Smell Of Incense', 'People Let's Freak Out', and 'The Orange Rooftop Of Your Mind", played by bands called The Blue Things, Freaks Of Nature, The Electric Prunes, and Painted Faces. Seamlessly mixed among these groovin' freakouts are the contemporary singles of "serious artists" like Jimi Hendrix, The Move, Steppenwolf, Soft Machine and (of course) Pink Floyd.

I have learned that if you want to be a psychedelic six-string warrior, the following is necessary:

1. A rocking beat. 2. Loud guitars. Distorted guitars. Loud distorted guitars. 3. Lyrics using words like "mirror of your mind". 4. A singer who sounds like Them-period Van Morrison.

Jon has ripped them all from 45s in his collection, so the sound is magnificent. There's a lot to take in but I'm thinking that the gems should be posted for the greater joy of MOGkind.

For starters here's the 45 version of The 13th Floor Elevators, "(I've Got) Elevation.

Now you've done it! I can't get Roky's "Two-Headed Dog" to stop playing over and over in my head! Ahhhhhhh!

But seriously, I gave my 16-year-old neice a copy of that Radio One - Established 1967 double-disc, and her little sister, the 5-year-old, co-opted it and has become obsessed with The Kaiser Chiefs' cover of The Move's psych-pop classic "Flowers in the Rain" (among other tracks). I don't know whether to be proud or to worry. (BTW, for some reason, the little one can't stand Amy Winehouse's version of "Cupid." She won't say why. And she's never seen a photo of Amy, so it can't be out of fear or disgust.)

Good lord, I remember well the first time I heard that crazed howl in "You're Gonna Miss Me". I was in high school and had found a bunch of Nugget series vinyls in my public library. Have enjoyed the 13th Floor Elevators quite a bit since then. Roky was in surprisingly good shape when I saw him live last year. Have you seen the Roky documentary film? I finally got around to watching my DVD copy this week. I didn't think it was all that great. I'd say it's worth watching if you're interested in the man and his complicated history and family, but less so if you just care about the music.

I'm curious to hear what rarer gems you've got from Savage's set.

I'm with ivylander - this needs to have a nice K-Tel style TV commercial produced for it, licensing secured, and possibly even in that order... Cheers!

Of all of the above, I can't seem any single reason to object. -- To quote Ivy, is this compilation is available at your local dealership?
