MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Time to celebrate the summer that's finally arrived!

If Carl Wilson has the voice of an angel, what does a heavenly choir sound like?

In 1967 in Hawaii, group rehearsals for a Beach Boys TV show were taped (though I’ve read disagreements from collectors and trufans over the exact circumstances of these recordings). Here’s a virtually acapella version of “God Only Knows”.

To hear Carl promoting his solo album, go hear.

i had little to no appreciation for the beach boys until spring this year, when i finally listened to how complex a lot of their stuff is, especially on pet sounds. i'm not a big fan or anything now simply because they aren't particularly my style, but i do respect the things that they did.

It's really something that so much beauty and artistry come from a lot of pain, misery and madness. If dad Murry Wilson hadn't been such a tyrant would any of this have been created? Watching Brian live a couple of times, I found myself wondering that a lot.

man that's sweet- seems even more ethereal, less obviously "poppy" than the original.

Their music is, of course, essential audio nourishment to me - and this is very tasty stuff.

That is a great version. It retains all the sweet melancholy of the original. I almost had my wife talked into making the original version of GOKWIBWOU our wedding song until, on her fourth listen she broke into uncontrollable sobs.

Let's map this out:

Rare bone-chillingly great audio from the greatest album ever made of one of the sweetest songs ever written by one of the greatest American groups ever

Best MOG music post ever?

Jameson, you make me blush. But great assessment of the sound, the song, the band. I'm too undiscerning to say best album ever, but certainly top 5. (or 3.)

_Pet Sounds_ by far has some of the most beautiful melodies and lyrics ever written. Paul McCartney says that "God Only Knows" is his favorite song. I absolutely love this live version you've posted here. You should also check out the Sessions CD - a la studio a cappella version of this. Sweet vocals - definitely spiritual. Thanks much.

Thanks so much for this! I heard what the BB described as their first public performance of God Only Knows during the summer of 1966 in the backyard of a friend in Virginia Beach. It was her birthday party..I had no idea what a treat it would end up being!! (I've always wondered what happened to Nancy Bone!) Loved it then, love it even more now..and your version is the closest I've ever heard - to my experience that June or July afternoon. Thank you!

Bev - Are you saying that you watched the Beach Boys sing in someone's backyard?!? That is definitely a private concert! And welcome to the Mogoverse - it's a fun place to be.

wow, i just got a copy of the whole pet sounds album acapella. it is phenomenal. from what i understand these are vocal takes from the studio sans the musical backing which brian recorded with the wrecking crew while the beach boys were out on tour. it is every bit as strong as the tracks with the music. very ethereal sounding.

OK. That sounds like aural gold. Where did this come from? An official release or "otherwise"?

it's "otherwise". :)

"This is a rare, alternate mix of what would eventually be on 1997’s The Pet Sounds Sessions box set. On the released version, Wilson actually left some music in the mix to avoid silences during extended instrumental passages. On this version, however, there is no music whatsoever (except for the opening seconds), and it’s a better mix as a result. Comparing the two, it appears time was edited to avoid lengthy silences. Stack-O-Vocals, as it’s referred to on the Sessions box, is a title nod to the Boys' unusual 1968 LP, Stack-O-Tracks, an early example of a karaoke record featuring only the music of The Beach Boys, no vocals. That LP sold so poorly it became the first Beach Boys album to officially go out of print." from -never get out of the boat.

Thanks for the link. I'm on it. I actually had a copy of Stack-O-Tracks. Like an idiot I got rid of it when it was $50. Icould probably pay off the mortgage with what it's worth now.

oh ouch! that reminds me of all the records i have lent and never saw again. how is it that some people interpret a loan as "here take this record forever?"
