WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Star Spotting!

Posted over 2 years ago
I was coming home after a weird but wonderful day at a manga expo. Seeing young teenagers dressed as Japanese superheroes was cute, seeing people in their early 20s dressed as superheroes was ummm, unusual, and watching a pale-skinned adult man taking photos of girls dressed in blue fur bikinis with cat ears and tails was distinctly creepy. We had just come out of the parking lot in Hammersmith, which is a pretty grubby part of town, when I thought I recognised a man standing on the pavement. He peered hard at me as we both did the ‘do I know this guy’ rummage through the brain. Slowly it dawned on me. He didn’t look like this anymore:He didn’t look like this:And he was even past this:Yes, Jimmy Page was standing on the street looking for a taxi. Must be nice not being bothered in public. Must be reassuring when someone still recognises you.

  3. soulrocket says fun post, i love some of the japanese anime, my nephews are into "bleach" and "one piece" right now thanks to me. ive been to a few manga & comics conventions & its almost the same that when i go to record fairs... some fun people, some creepy ones and that weird feeling that everybody there is into the same thing. liked the page anecdote as well, its strange when something like that happens and the brain makes a quick stock of the situation balancing who, where, how & when.

  4. Jonh Ingham says soulrocket - Bleach rocks! I love the mix of ultra-action and humour. And yes, there were some Bleach posses there. I'll need to check out 'one piece' - tho no doubt my daughter knows all about it.

  5. contrabandwidth says Reminds me of my star encounter in my only trip to London. I was making a phone call home, my friend (always a talkative one) saw an old man standing with a guitar case with a "Steal Your Face" sticker on it. He inquired about it and asked what he played. The old man chuckled and said it was his son's guitar, and that he was just getting some cigarettes or something, he was watching it. He asked about his son and he said he had been in bands but was currently playing with Sting. When asked what bands, the old man said "have you ever heard of World Party?" My friend was like, "hell yeah I have!" And I'm sure he sang a little of "Put The Message In The Box" for him (because he would do something like that). Eventually Mark Wallinger showed up to claim guitar and dad, and I successfully managed to not meet him despite my friend banging on the phone booth (I was on an overseas call, I didn't think anything he wanted me to see could be that important). He got his autograph and I got the experience of totally shunning Mark Wallinger.

  9. 2Serenity says I appreciate your comments about Japanese culture because a friend of mine lived in Japan for 5 years as a teacher and made the same observations. She informed me that people in their 20s and older are obsessed with being young and are addicted to anime. Interesting... Hope all is well! Missed reading your blog. I've been offline for awhile but I will catch up and read what I missed!

  11. Jonh Ingham says 2Serenity - I lived in Tokyo about 6 years. Yes, the obsession with 'young' can reach unhealthy extremes, such as 'Lolita' magazine, full of photos of young girls at school or in the playground, available at most newsagents. And manga and anime are established media forms - indeed, some of the best story themes and philosophical ideas I've encountered in the last few years have been in these forms. The Japanese have incredible imaginations. David - sighting Page so unexpectedly was an appropriate end to a strange day.
